NFT Airdrop

An NFT airdrop is the distribution of NFTs directly to holders’ wallets at no cost — executed by taking a snapshot of existing holders at a specific block, then sending new NFTs to those wallets proportionally or equally, used by projects to reward loyal holders (often with companion collections or upgrades), generate excitement, attract new buyers anticipating future airdrops, and build ecosystem value around an existing collection.

How Airdrops Work

Snapshot:

The project takes a “snapshot” of the blockchain at a specific block number — recording exactly which wallet holds which NFTs at that moment. Snapshot announcement typically triggers buying activity (people buy in before the snapshot to qualify for the airdrop).

Distribution:

  1. Push model (most common): The project’s smart contract or admin sends NFTs directly to qualifying wallets. Recipients don’t need to do anything.
  2. Claim model: Eligible wallets can visit a site and claim their airdrop within a time window. Unclaimed airdrops may expire.
  3. Mint-based: Eligible wallets are put on an allowlist to mint the airdropped collection for free.

Why Projects Airdrop

Reward loyal holders:

  • Recognizes and compensates long-term community members
  • Creates incentive to hold (not sell) before the snapshot
  • BAYC → BAKC airdrop is the canonical example

Launch companion collections:

  • New collection distributed to existing holders expands the ecosystem
  • BAYC holders received BAKC (dogs), Mutant Serum (→ MAYC), and ApeCoin
  • Each airdrop added asset value to holding the original

Token distribution:

  • Project governance tokens or utility tokens airdropped to NFT holders
  • BAYC holders received ApeCoin (APE token)
  • Creates alignment between NFT holders and project token economics

Reward community participation:

  • Airdrop to Discord members, early supporters, or participants in specific activities
  • Marketing and community growth tool

Famous NFT Airdrops

Airdrop From To Value (peak)
BAKC (dogs) BAYC BAYC holders ~7–8 ETH/dog
MAYC (mutants) Yuga Labs BAYC holders ~20–30 ETH/mutant
ApeCoin (APE) APE Foundation BAYC/MAYC/BAKC holders ~15 APE/$13/NFT at peak
Y00ts DeGods holders Significant value

The Snapshot Pump

A predictable pattern around major airdrops:

  1. Announcement: Airdrop announced for all holders at snapshot date
  2. Buying pressure: Buyers enter positions to qualify
  3. Snapshot occurs: Floor price often drops after snapshot (buyers who entered only for the airdrop sell)
  4. Airdrop received: Holders evaluate whether to keep or sell the airdropped asset

Airdrop vs. Companion Collection

Airdrop: Broad distribution; quantity matches or reflects existing supply; gift to community.

Companion collection: A new, distinct collection strategically linked to the original. Often delivered via airdrop, but the term emphasizes the ongoing relationship between the two collections.

Many companion collections (BAKC, MAYC) were distributed as airdrops, so the terms overlap significantly.

History

  • 2017 — CryptoKitties introduces early NFT gifting/breeding mechanics
  • June 2021 — BAKC airdrop to BAYC holders; establishes the companion airdrop template
  • August 2021 — Mutant Serum airdrop to BAYC holders (to create MAYC); largest NFT airdrop to date
  • March 2022 — ApeCoin airdrop to BAYC/MAYC/BAKC holders; ~$150M distributed to NFT holders in one event
  • 2022–2024 — Airdrops are standard project mechanics; the “will this have an airdrop?” question is asked of every major NFT collection

Common Misconceptions

  • “Snapshots can be gamed by borrowing NFTs.” — Projects are aware of snapshot timing; some use multiple snapshots or randomized block numbers. NFT lending protocols complicate snapshot eligibility; some projects explicitly exclude loaned NFTs.
  • “All airdrops are valuable.” — Many airdrops are worthless tokens or NFTs with no community or utility. Valuable airdrops come from established projects with genuine ecosystems. “Airdrop” alone is not a guarantee of value.

Social Media Sentiment

  • X/Twitter: Airdrop announcements are high-engagement moments in NFT communities; speculation about future airdrops drives holding behavior.
  • r/NFT: Airdrops are enthusiastically discussed; the BAYC/BAKC/APE sequence is the gold standard case study.
  • General crypto community: NFT airdrops are occasionally held to a higher standard than token airdrops — more visible, more personal, more about community.
