Bored Ape Kennel Club

Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) is an Ethereum NFT collection of dog avatars created as companions to the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Yuga Labs distributed it to BAYC holders in 2021. Each dog is a separate token; owning one does not itself make someone a BAYC member or promise future benefits.

The collection

BAKC is a profile-picture collectible collection in the wider Yuga Labs ecosystem. The token and its artwork should be understood separately: a wallet can hold a BAKC token without holding a Bored Ape, and a marketplace listing is only a way to buy or sell the token. It does not establish that the seller is offering extra rights beyond the applicable license and project terms.

The collection is distinct from Mutant Ape Yacht Club. Yuga’s description treats the Kennel Club dogs and Mutant Apes as different additions to BAYC: one is a dog NFT collection, while the other is associated with a separate serum-based transformation mechanic.

The 2021 distribution

Yuga Labs says it airdropped BAKC to every BAYC holder on June 18, 2021, and revealed the dogs on June 25. The project also pledged royalties from the first secondary-market sales to animal-welfare organizations; Yuga’s retrospective reports that the effort ultimately donated more than $1 million to animal charities. This is a historical description, not a promise of ongoing donations or a current holder benefit.

An airdrop describes how tokens were made available to eligible wallets. It does not mean that an on-chain claim has no transaction cost, that a recipient must keep the token, or that the dog and ape remain linked after a transfer.

How it relates to BAYC

BAKC is connected to BAYC by its original eligibility and companion-art concept, but the two collections have separate tokens and can be transferred independently. The BAKC contract records dog tokens; the BAYC contract records apes. Yuga Labs’ broader ecosystem also includes MAYC, but the Mutant Serum story belongs to that separate collection rather than to BAKC.

That distinction matters when reading older posts that use “Bored Ape ecosystem” as if all of its assets were one product. A collection relationship can explain a project’s history without guaranteeing shared ownership, governance, access, or value.

Common misconceptions

  • “BAKC is a serum that makes a Mutant Ape.” No. BAKC is a dog NFT collection; the serum mechanic relates to MAYC.
  • “A BAKC token includes a BAYC token.” No. They are separate assets, and the 2021 eligibility event did not permanently bind their ownership.
  • “Airdropped means free in every sense.” The initial distribution was an airdrop, but claiming a blockchain token can still require a network transaction. Secondary purchases also have their own costs and risks.
  • “The collection guarantees perks or investment returns.” No such guarantee follows from holding the token. Check current official terms rather than relying on old roadmap or marketplace descriptions.

Social Media Sentiment

One January 2022 r/opensea discussion focused on a report that one buyer had acquired 31 BAKC dogs and whether a single large purchase could affect the collection’s floor price. Replies also speculated about possible future utility. This is a small, dated example of collector discussion, not evidence of a lasting price effect, confirmed utility, or overall community opinion.
