NFA (Not Financial Advice)

NFA stands for “Not Financial Advice” — a disclaimer ubiquitous in crypto communities that writers, influencers, and traders append when sharing market analysis, price predictions, or token recommendations. It signals that the content is personal opinion rather than licensed financial guidance, providing informal protection against liability.

Why NFA Exists

In most jurisdictions, providing investment advice professionally requires licensing (e.g., as a Registered Investment Advisor in the US). Unlicensed individuals who recommend specific investments can face regulatory consequences.

Crypto’s culture of openly sharing trading ideas, price targets, and token calls created a community norm of appending NFA to clearly caveat the content:

> “I think ETH is going to $10K this cycle, NFA DYOR”

This communicates: “I’m sharing my personal thesis, not advising you to trade on it.”

NFA in Context

NFA is almost always paired with related acronyms:

Acronym Meaning
NFA Not Financial Advice
DYOR Do Your Own Research
NGMI Not Gonna Make It (bad decisions)
WAGMI We’re All Gonna Make It

Ironic NFA Usage

The term is often used ironically — someone will make a very specific trading recommendation with high conviction and then add “NFA” almost as punctuation:

> “This chart is a perfect ascending triangle, target is 3× from here, strong accumulation, loading up now. NFA.”

The irony is that the preceding content is clearly intended to influence trading decisions, with NFA as a legal fig leaf rather than a genuine disclaimer.

Does NFA Actually Protect Legally?

Not reliably:

  • NFA doesn’t transform unlicensed financial advice into legal activity in regulated jurisdictions
  • If content systematically promotes securities with hidden economic interest (pump-and-dump), NFA provides no protection
  • SEC has pursued crypto influencers who promoted tokens for compensation without disclosure, NFA disclaimer notwithstanding
