Puffer Finance is an Ethereum protocol and product suite spanning staking, restaking, and rollup infrastructure. Its current documentation describes a native Liquid Restaking Protocol (nLRP) integrated with EigenLayer, the pufETH liquid restaking token, Puffer Preconf, UniFi, and institutional staking services. These are related products, not interchangeable names: the 2024 Puffer UniFi Litepaper is a separate historical design document.
Native restaking and pufETH
Puffer’s nLRP combines Ethereum validator staking with restaking through EigenLayer. Users depositing ETH can receive pufETH, a liquid restaking token representing a position in the protocol. Its market price, liquidity, redemption timing, and rewards can vary; a pufETH holder should not assume that it always trades at or redeems one-for-one with ETH. The outcome can depend on Puffer’s contracts and operators, EigenLayer rules, any services selected, withdrawals, and market conditions.
Secure-Signer and slashing protection
Puffer’s earlier technical material describes Secure-Signer, a signing tool that uses a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) and remote attestation to help protect validator keys and prevent certain slashable signing errors. Such controls can reduce some operational risks, but they do not remove software, configuration, hardware, attestation, operator, or smart-contract risks. Historical claims about operator bonds, validator requirements, or a particular TEE should not be treated as current product parameters unless current documentation confirms them.
Puffer Preconf and UniFi are separate products
Puffer Preconf is a service for providing Layer 2 transaction preconfirmations; UniFi is Puffer’s based-rollup project. Both relate to Ethereum infrastructure, but neither is the same as pufETH or the nLRP. Puffer’s public pages advertise roughly 100-millisecond confirmations and describe restaked ETH as economic backing. Those are provider claims, not Ethereum finality or an independent performance measurement. Puffer’s own roadmap also distinguishes current phases from a later full-slashing implementation, so do not assume every advertised protection is already active. UniFi’s developer documentation explains that a preconfirmed receipt can appear before a block is sealed; some state is temporarily volatile during that interval.
Current product notice
On the Puffer Restake page reviewed on 2026-10-16, the site displayed a notice asking users with assets in the existing UniFi Vault to withdraw while a new vault is prepared. This is a dated operational notice, not a permanent product rule; check Puffer’s live interface and official documentation before depositing or withdrawing.
Risks and limitations
- Slashing and contract risk: validator errors, service rules, bugs, or operator failures can affect deposits and rewards.
- Token and liquidity risk: pufETH can trade away from ETH, and liquidity or redemption conditions can change.
- Technical dependencies: TEE hardware, remote attestation, validator operators, EigenLayer, gateways, and contract upgrades each have trust and availability assumptions.
- Changing products: Secure-Signer, validator programs, restaking, UniFi, and Puffer Preconf have evolved. Separate dated proposals and marketing material from current implementation details.
Social Media Sentiment
A small thread in the Puffer-specific r/puffer_finance community discusses pufETH using high-yield and protection language. The captured thread had four votes and one short positive reply. Its promotional framing and narrow audience make it a weak sentiment sample, not evidence of broad or independent market opinion.
