EigenLayer

EigenLayer is a smart contract protocol on Ethereum built by Eigen Labs, founded by Sreeram Kannan. It introduces restaking — the ability to use staked ETH as cryptoeconomic security for protocols beyond Ethereum itself. By 2024, EigenLayer had grown to over $15 billion in total value locked, becoming one of the largest DeFi protocols by TVL and spawning an entirely new category: Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs).

Founding and Team

Sreeram Kannan — Founder and CEO. Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. His research background is in information theory and coding theory. He conceived EigenLayer as an application of information-theoretic security ideas to blockchain economics.

Eigen Labs — The organization developing EigenLayer. Raised over $100 million in venture capital, including a $50M Series A (2023) led by a16z Crypto.

Core Architecture

Three Actors in EigenLayer

Actor Role
Restakers Deposit staked ETH or LSTs; delegate to operators; earn AVS rewards
Operators Run additional software for AVSs; hold delegated restake; subject to slashing
AVSs (Actively Validated Services) Protocols that pay for restaked security

How Security Flows

“`

Staker deposits 32 ETH → Ethereum validator → opts into EigenLayer →

delegates to Operator → Operator runs AVS software →

AVS pays rewards → Operator slashable if they cheat AVS

“`

Slashing Contracts — AVSs define their own slashing conditions via smart contracts registered with EigenLayer. If an Operator violates an AVS rule, the AVS can trigger a slash on the Operator’s restaked ETH.

Key Products

EigenDA — EigenLayer’s flagship AVS: a data availability layer. EigenDA operators store data off-chain and are slashable if they fail to provide data on demand. EigenDA competes with Celestia and Avail as a modular DA solution for rollups, with the advantage of being secured by ETH restaking.

EIGEN Token — The protocol’s native token. Initially launched as non-transferable and with geographic restrictions on the airdrop, causing controversy. EIGEN is designed as a “universal intersubjective work token” — used for staking on AVSs that require off-chain agreement rather than on-chain proof.

Timeline

2021 Sreeram Kannan publishes early EigenLayer concept
Mar 2023 EigenLayer phase 1 mainnet: LST restaking with deposit caps
Sep 2023 Phase 2: native ETH restaking (validator withdrawal credential delegation)
Feb 2024 Deposit caps lifted; $6B+ TVL reached in days
Apr 2024 EIGEN token announced with controversial airdrop design
Apr 2024 EigenDA mainnet launch
Jun 2024 Slashing not yet live (“Stage 1” — operators trusted, not yet cryptoeconomically enforced)
2024 First wave of AVSs launch: Lagrange, AltLayer, Hyperlane, eOracle, Witness Chain

Controversy

Slashing not live at launch: EigenLayer launched with billions in restaked ETH but slashing conditions were not enforced on mainnet initially — meaning “restaked security” was trust-based during early stages.

EIGEN airdrop: Initial design made EIGEN non-transferable, excluded US and several other countries, and had low percentage going to community. Multiple program revisions followed.

Vitalik’s warning: Vitalik Buterin published a post warning that AVSs should not rely on Ethereum’s social layer (informal consensus) for conflict resolution, as this would “overload Ethereum’s consensus.”

LRT systemic risk: Third-party liquid restaking protocols (Ether.fi, Renzo, Kelp) built on top of EigenLayer, creating multi-layer leverage structures that regulators and researchers flagged as potential systemic risk.

How to Use EigenLayer

  1. Hold ETH, stETH, rETH, cbETH, or other approved LSTs
  2. Visit app.eigenlayer.xyz
  3. Deposit LSTs into EigenLayer restaking contracts
  4. Delegate restaked position to a Node Operator
  5. Earn staking yield (from original ETH stake) + AVS rewards (from EigenLayer)

Alternatively: buy a Liquid Restaking Token (eETH, ezETH, rsETH) from Ether.fi, Renzo, or Kelp — these handle EigenLayer restaking automatically and issue a tradeable token.

Social Media Sentiment

EigenLayer was the dominant narrative in Ethereum DeFi in 2023–2024. “Points farming” for the EIGEN airdrop drove billions in deposits. Post-airdrop sentiment cooled significantly as EIGEN’s tokenomics disappointed many airdrop hunters. Long-term institutional interest remains strong — the AVS ecosystem and EigenDA continue to attract development activity. LRT protocol drama (de-pegs, token disputes) also generated negative sentiment spillover.
