Worldcoin (WLD)

Worldcoin (WLD) is the token associated with World, a network that combines a digital identity system with financial and application services. World ID is a proof-of-personhood credential; WLD is a separate crypto asset. WLD grants are subject to eligibility and availability, so the project should not be described as providing a guaranteed universal basic income.

World ID and verification

World ID is designed to let a person prove a property such as being a unique human without revealing their name or other identifying details to an app. The protocol uses zero-knowledge proofs for some verification flows. An Orb-based verification is one route to a verified World ID; it is not a legal identity document and availability depends on location and program rules. The broader concept is a proof-of-personhood system.

World’s current FAQ says the Orb captures images of the user’s eyes and face, packages encrypted data for the person’s device under Personal Custody, and deletes the images from the Orb. That is the project’s description of its privacy design, not an independent guarantee that every device, user, or operational risk is eliminated. Read the current privacy notice and decide whether biometric verification fits your needs.

WLD networks and tokenomics

WLD is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. World’s whitepaper describes World Chain as the main venue for access and use, with an older bridged version remaining on Optimism. CoinGecko’s current listing shows a 10-billion initial maximum and a circulating-supply snapshot in the table. The whitepaper says any supply inflation can begin no earlier than July 24, 2038, must be enabled through governance, and is capped at 1.5% annually; the default rate is 0%.

WLD has been used for eligible user-token claims and within World’s applications, but claims are not guaranteed and restrictions apply. WLD is not World ID itself: holding or transferring the token does not prove someone is human, and verifying World ID does not mean a person owns WLD.

Social Media Sentiment

In a roughly one-year-old r/worldcoin discussion asking whether the app was safe, commenters shared mixed personal experiences. Some described uncomplicated use or interest in the app’s incentives and possible uses; others raised concerns about biometric privacy or reported problems with token eligibility and account support. These are individual, unverified comments in one thread, not a representative sample or a current consensus.

Scope and risks

World combines identity, biometric processing, a crypto wallet, and a token economy, but each feature has distinct rules and risks. Availability, eligibility, token claims, privacy choices, and local regulation can differ by country. Token prices may be volatile, and a market listing does not establish that a token grant is available to a particular person.
