TAO (Bittensor)

TAO is the native utility and emissions token of Bittensor, a decentralized AI network where miners compete to provide the best machine learning model outputs and validators rank those outputs using the Yuma Consensus mechanism — with TAO emissions distributed to high-quality miners and validators, a 21 million maximum supply capped like Bitcoin (with 4-year halving cycles), and a multi-subnet architecture (each subnet specializing in a different AI task: text generation, image recognition, financial prediction, etc.) enabling a decentralized marketplace for AI intelligence.

For Bittensor’s full technical architecture, subnet system, and founding history (Jacob Steeves, Ala Shaabana), see the Bittensor entry.

Parameter Value
Ticker TAO
Max supply 21,000,000 (mirrors Bitcoin)
Halving Every ~10.5 million blocks (~4 years)

Use Cases

  • Validator staking — TAO holders can stake their TAO to validators (“hotkeys”) and earn a portion of validator emissions.
  • Subnet registration — subnet creators must register by burning TAO (market-rate subnet registration cost).
  • Alpha tokens — TAO is used to purchase subnet-specific Alpha tokens in the Dynamic TAO (dTAO) model (introduced 2025).

History

  • 2021-11 — Bittensor network launches. TAO begins mining with minimal public awareness.
  • 2023 — Bittensor gains significant attention as the decentralized AI narrative explodes post-ChatGPT. TAO price rises from ~$30 to several hundred dollars.
  • 2024 — TAO reaches an all-time high near $760 during the AI crypto narrative peak in early 2024. Market cap briefly exceeds $5 billion.
  • 2025 — Dynamic TAO (dTAO) launches, replacing centralized root network emissions with a market-based subnet token (Alpha token) mechanism.
