Stani Kulechov

Stani Kulechov is the founder and CEO of Aave Labs. The project began as ETHLend in 2017 and later became the Aave Protocol. Aave Labs, the protocol, and the Aave DAO are connected but distinct: Aave Labs develops software and products, while changes to the protocol follow a governance process involving AAVE token holders and contributors. A founder’s company role should not be confused with unilateral control over every protocol decision.

From ETHLend to Aave

ETHLend began with peer-to-peer crypto lending: a borrower and lender were matched for an individual loan. In a retrospective report to the Aave DAO, Aave Labs said ETHLend’s 2017 token sale raised $16.2 million and that matching individual loans proved difficult to scale. The team rebuilt the product around shared liquidity pools and rebranded it as Aave. Aave V1 launched in 2020. This is the project’s own account of its history.

In a pooled lending market, suppliers place assets into protocol markets and borrowers draw from available liquidity subject to each market’s collateral and risk settings. Rates and available liquidity can change; deposits are exposed to smart-contract, asset, liquidation, and governance risks. Aave’s growth therefore reflects both product development and decisions made through its wider governance system.

Aave Labs, the Aave DAO, and Lens

Aave Labs is a contributor and product company; Aave governance is a separate process for protocol decisions. Public governance discussions have included questions about fees, branding, intellectual property, and how products built by Labs relate to the DAO. Those debates should be described as governance disputes, rather than treated as proof that either side controls every part of the system.

Kulechov has also been associated with Lens, a decentralized social protocol developed by the Avara team. In January 2026, Mask Network announced that it would steward Lens’s next phase while Avara remained in an advisory role. Lens is a separate project from Aave’s lending protocol, and its current stewardship should not be described as solely Kulechov-led.

Social Media Sentiment

One visible strand of public discussion is critical of the relationship between Aave Labs and the DAO. A December 25, 2025 r/defi post raises questions about frontend fees, intellectual property, and token-holder interests. It presents its author’s opinion and allegations; one post is not a survey, does not establish those claims as facts, and cannot represent the wider community. Aave’s governance documentation describes a formal proposal and voting process, while Lens’s stewardship transition is a separate matter. The available evidence supports saying that governance boundaries have been contested, but does not establish one uniform public view of Kulechov personally.
