Ronin

Ronin (RON) is the native token of the Ronin Network — an Ethereum-linked EVM-compatible sidechain created by Sky Mavis in 2021 specifically to support Axie Infinity and subsequent Sky Mavis games by replacing expensive Ethereum transactions with near-zero-fee Ronin transactions for in-game activities like asset transfers, breeding, and NFT trading. RON is used to pay gas fees on Ronin, stake with validators, and participate in governance, with the token launching publicly in January 2022.

How It Works

  1. EVM sidechain — Ronin is a separate EVM-compatible blockchain (not a true Layer 2 with Ethereum settlement). A bridge connects Ronin to Ethereum, allowing asset movement between the two chains.
  2. Delegated PoS — Ronin uses DPoS with a validator set. RON holders delegate their tokens to validators who produce blocks and earn rewards. Delegators earn a share of validator rewards.
  3. Gas fees — All Ronin transactions pay gas in RON. Early Axie Infinity had delegated gas subsidies (free transactions for authorized wallets) before RON launched; gas was later enforced.
  4. Sky Mavis bridge — The Ronin Bridge allows ETH, USDC, and other assets to be bridged from Ethereum to Ronin and back. It was a critical piece of infrastructure that suffered a major exploit.
  5. Decentralization over time — Ronin originally operated with only 9 validators (all controlled or whitelisted by Sky Mavis) — highly centralized. After the 2022 hack, Ronin increased its validator set and opened permissionless delegation.

Use Cases

  • Gas payments — Pay for all Ronin Network transactions.
  • Validator staking — Stake RON with validators to earn staking yield.
  • Governance — Vote on Ronin proposals.
  • Gaming ecosystem access — Used in Axie Infinity and future Sky Mavis games.

History

  • 2021-04 — Ronin Network launches for Axie Infinity. Initially uses Proof-of-Authority (9 validators, all Sky Mavis-controlled). Free gas via delegation system.
  • 2021 — Axie Infinity peaks at millions of daily active users and billions in monthly NFT volume, particularly in Southeast Asia play-to-earn. Ronin handles massive transaction volumes.
  • 2022-01-27 — RON token launches publicly via Katana DEX (Ronin’s native AMM DEX).
  • 2022-03-23 — Ronin Bridge hack: a catastrophic exploit drains 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC (~$625 million at the time) from the Ronin bridge. It is one of the largest crypto hacks in history. Attributed to the Lazarus Group (North Korean state-sponsored hackers) by the FBI. The hack exploited 5 out of 9 validator private keys.
  • 2022-04 — Sky Mavis secures a $150 million fundraise (led by Binance) to reimburse hack victims. Full reimbursement completed.
  • 2022-06 — Upgraded bridge reopens. Validator set expanded; Axie DAO controls additional validator slots. RON price declines in bear market.
  • 2023 — Ronin adds permissionless staking, expanding validator decentralization. New games from Sky Mavis and third-party developers deploy on Ronin.
  • 2024 — Ronin positions as a gaming-focused L1/sidechain with broader ecosystem beyond Axie Infinity. RON recovers but remains below ATH. Pixel and other games launch on Ronin.

Common Misconceptions

“Ronin is a Layer 2.”

Ronin is a sidechain — it does not use Ethereum for settlement or fraud proofs. Assets on Ronin are secured by Ronin’s own validator set, not Ethereum. This is distinct from L2s like Arbitrum or Optimism.

“The 2022 hack means Ronin is permanently insecure.”

The Ronin bridge was fundamentally redesigned after the hack with more validators, threshold signature requirements, transaction monitoring, and circuit breakers. No major bridges are inherently immune to exploits, but the upgraded Ronin bridge is significantly more hardened.

Social Media Sentiment

Ronin is closely tied to Axie Infinity’s trajectory. The 2022 hack was devastating for community trust and the P2E narrative broadly. Sky Mavis’s full user reimbursement preserved some goodwill. Ronin has evolved toward a broader gaming chain narrative, and RON price recovered substantially in 2023–2024 as gaming tokens regained interest. The validator decentralization improvements are noted positively by the technical blockchain community.
