Riot Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIOT) operates Bitcoin-mining facilities and has expanded into data-center infrastructure for customers. Its current business has three reportable segments—Bitcoin Mining, Data Center, and Engineering—and the company is adapting some power-connected sites for AI and high-performance computing (HPC). This shift does not mean Riot has stopped mining Bitcoin: mining and data-center operations now sit side by side.
Current facilities
Riot operates facilities at Rockdale and Corsicana in Texas and at two sites in Kentucky. In its report for June 30, 2026, the company described Rockdale as having up to about 700 megawatts (MW) of developed capacity for mining and data-center leasing. Corsicana had about 400 MW of developed capacity, with a full-buildout target of roughly 1 gigawatt (GW) for Bitcoin mining and other high-density computing workloads. The Kentucky facilities had about 192 MW of developed capacity. These dated capacity figures describe power and site development; they are not all data-center customer capacity already online.
Data-center and AI contracts
Riot’s Rockdale campus now supports both mining and data-center development. By the end of the second quarter of 2026, Riot had completed the first 25 MW of critical IT capacity under its AMD lease. A further 25 MW expansion was under construction, with phased delivery planned after the quarter. Riot reported $23.2 million in Data Center revenue for Q2 2026; that amount included $18.3 million from tenant fit-out services as well as $4.9 million in operating lease revenue, so it should not be read as recurring rent alone.
In August 2026, after the quarter ended, Riot signed a separate 20-year lease for 191 MW of critical IT capacity at Rockdale with an unnamed frontier AI lab. Riot said the initial term is expected to generate about $9.1 billion in contract revenue, with the first 96 MW scheduled for December 2027 and the full 191 MW for June 2028. Together with AMD, Riot said its signed data-center leases covered 241 MW. Those figures describe contracted capacity and expected future revenue; construction, commissioning, and delivery still lie ahead for the new lease.
Bitcoin mining and energy programs
Bitcoin mining remains a substantial part of Riot’s business. In Q2 2026, it reported $113.7 million in Bitcoin Mining revenue and produced 1,587 bitcoin. The same report identified Engineering as a separate segment, including custom electrical equipment used in data-center and power infrastructure. Riot also reported credits linked to selling unused power and participating in grid ancillary-service and demand-response programs in ERCOT and MISO. Those credits vary with power-market conditions and are not a fixed payment for simply pausing mining.
What the transition does—and does not—show
Riot’s strategy is moving beyond a mining-only model, but its sites and business are at different stages: some capacity mines Bitcoin today, some data-center capacity is already leased and operating, and other projects remain under construction or scheduled for later delivery. Data-center leases can diversify revenue, while requiring substantial development, financing, and operating work. Bitcoin prices, network difficulty, energy costs, contract milestones, and tenant demand can all affect results. The roughly 1 GW Corsicana figure is a full-buildout target, not current data-center capacity.
Social Media Sentiment
A small October 12 discussion in r/RiotBlockchain focused on RIOT shares not keeping pace with a weekend Bitcoin-price rise. Replies mentioned uncertainty around a bridge-loan resolution and Texas data-center construction, while other comments speculated about near-term share prices.
