Real Yield

“Real yield” is an informal DeFi label for returns funded by economic activity or income rather than only by newly issued reward tokens. Depending on the product, that activity might include borrower interest, trading fees, liquidation fees, or income from assets held by a protocol. The label has no universal accounting definition and does not by itself mean that a return is sustainable, low-risk, or paid in cash.

Fees, protocol revenue, and holder revenue

These amounts are not interchangeable. DeFiLlama defines fees as what users pay, protocol revenue as the portion kept by the protocol after amounts paid to liquidity providers, and holders revenue as the part returned to tokenholders through distributions, buybacks, or burns. Other analytics providers may apply different methods. A pool can generate fees without the protocol retaining them, and protocol revenue can exist without being distributed to tokenholders or depositors.

How to assess a yield claim

Trace the return to its source and identify who pays it. Separate borrower interest and trading fees from token incentives, then check whether the quoted rate is gross or net of protocol fees, borrowing costs, losses, and other expenses. Ask whether the payment is actually claimable, whether it is denominated in a volatile reward token, and whether the position exposes you to impermanent loss, collateral, liquidation, withdrawal, or smart-contract risk. Annualized rates can change as usage, prices, liquidity, or emissions change.

Why “real” does not mean risk-free

Income from real activity can still be temporary or insufficient to cover an advertised rate. Fee revenue may fluctuate; a liquidity provider can lose value even while earning fees; and token buybacks or burns may not equal direct cash distributions. GMX’s current documentation, for example, distinguishes fees accruing to liquidity pools from protocol fees and notes that GMX-token buyback distributions are suspended. That is why the revenue path and the exact asset received matter more than a slogan.

In a small the Reddit discussion discussion, users focus on where yield comes from, whether emissions are temporary, and whether the displayed APY survives fees and exit costs. This is a limited discussion sample, not a survey of DeFi users.
