Polychain Capital is one of the earliest and largest dedicated crypto-native investment firms, founded in 2016 by Olaf Carlson-Wee. Carlson-Wee was Coinbase’s first full-time employee and used his early cryptocurrency holdings to seed a fund with the thesis that blockchain protocols themselves — not applications built on top — would be the dominant investable assets of the next decade. Polychain raised $10M in its first fund with backing from Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures, and has since grown to manage over $1 billion across multiple funds.
Background
The firm was founded on an early version of the “fat protocols” thesis: that value would accrue to base layers (L1 blockchains, consensus protocols, token networks) rather than application layers. This led Polychain to take large early positions in projects like Filecoin, Polkadot, and Cosmos before they launched — betting on protocol ecosystems rather than individual products.
Polychain operates both a hedge fund vehicle (enabling liquid token positions) and a venture fund structure (enabling equity + token positions in early-stage projects). This hybrid structure allowed it to participate in ICOs during 2017–2018 while also making traditional equity investments.
Leadership
Olaf Carlson-Wee is the founder and CEO. Prior to Polychain, he was Coinbase’s first employee (hired in 2013), where he asked to be paid entirely in Bitcoin. His early conviction in crypto is legendary in the industry and gave Polychain its founding capital base.
Notable Investments
- Polkadot — early DOT backer before mainnet launch
- Cosmos — early ATOM backer
- Filecoin — participated in the $200M+ token sale
- dYdX — decentralized perpetuals
- Compound — early DeFi lending protocol
- Uniswap — early DEX AMM backer
- Acala, Moonbeam — Polkadot ecosystem
- Starkware — ZK rollup infrastructure
Strategy
Polychain’s multi-chain thesis was contrarian during the periods of maximum Ethereum dominance. By backing Polkadot and Cosmos early, the firm positioned for an ecosystem where multiple sovereign chains would interoperate rather than a single chain hosting all applications. This thesis has had mixed results — Polkadot and Cosmos underperformed Ethereum in the 2020–2021 bull cycle relative to early expectations, but remain significant ecosystems.
