Ondo Finance (ONDO)

ONDO is the governance token of Ondo Finance, the leading protocol for tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) on Ethereum. Ondo enables institutions and DeFi users to access US Treasury yield on-chain through products like OUSG (Ondo Short-Term US Government Bond Fund) and USDY (Ondo US Dollar Yield), which are tokenized versions of BlackRock’s money market funds and short-term treasuries. As interest rates rose in 2022-2024, these products offered yields of 4–5% — significantly above most stable DeFi yields — making Ondo the fastest-growing RWA protocol in the space.

How It Works

OUSG (Ondo Short-Term US Government Bond Fund):

  • Backed by BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) and similar instruments
  • Available to KYC’d institutional investors and accredited investors
  • Tokenized as an ERC-20 on Ethereum; transferable between whitelisted addresses
  • Yield distributed daily via token rebasing

USDY (Ondo US Dollar Yield):

  • A yield-bearing stablecoin alternative backed by US Treasuries
  • Available to non-US individuals (KYC required, but broader eligibility than OUSG)
  • Fixed yield (~5% at peak 2023 rates); more accessible than OUSG
  • Compatible with DeFi protocols for use as collateral

Ondo’s architecture:

Ondo acts as the bridge between BlackRock’s on-chain fund (BUIDL) and the DeFi ecosystem. Ondo must KYC all investors, maintain regulatory compliance, and handle the traditional finance settlement layer, while providing on-chain composability via standard ERC-20 tokens.

Tokenomics

Allocation Amount Notes
Ecosystem/community 52.1% Incentives, grants, airdrops
Investors 19.3% 1-year cliff + vesting
Protocol development 16.9% Foundation-controlled
Team 11.7% 1-year cliff + 3-year vesting

Max supply: 10,000,000,000 ONDO (10 billion). ONDO launched in January 2024 with an initial airdrop to early Ondo users and DeFi community members. Vesting for investors and team begin unlocking in early 2025.

Use Cases

  • Governance — ONDO holders vote on new product launches, chain expansions, and protocol parameters
  • Access to RWA yield — OUSG and USDY bring US Treasury yield on-chain for DeFi users
  • Cross-chain expansion — Ondo’s Flux Finance and multi-chain strategy governed by ONDO token
  • Institutional DeFi — ONDO represents a bet that tokenized RWAs will become a multitrillion-dollar asset class

History

  • 2022 — Ondo Finance launches; initially focuses on structured DeFi products (protected yield vaults)
  • Jan 2023 — Ondo pivots to tokenized US Treasuries as rising rates make Treasury yield highly attractive
  • 2023 — Ondo becomes #1 RWA protocol by TVL; OUSG manages hundreds of millions in tokenized Treasuries; USDY launches as a more accessible product
  • Jan 2024 — ONDO token launches via community sale and airdrop; token enables governance of the protocol
  • 2024 — Ondo expands to Solana, Aptos, Mantle; partners with Google Cloud for on-chain payments infrastructure; reaches $500M+ in total TVL

Common Misconceptions

“USDY is just another stablecoin.” USDY is a yield-bearing asset — it generates real yield from Treasury bills, unlike stablecoins like USDC or USDT that capture no yield for holders. It’s better thought of as an on-chain money market fund.

“Ondo products are available to everyone.” OUSG requires accredited investor status and KYC. USDY is more accessible but still requires KYC and is unavailable to US persons. Ondo operates in a regulated framework.
