Oasis Network (ROSE) is a privacy-first, scalable Layer 1 blockchain that separates consensus from execution — the Consensus Layer handles finality using Tendermint PoS, while multiple parallel ParaTimes handle different execution environments (EVM, WASM, confidential compute) — with the Sapphire ParaTime enabling confidential EVM smart contracts using Intel SGX Trusted Execution Environments, making Oasis one of the most capable confidential computing blockchains.

How It Works
- Consensus Layer — The Oasis Consensus Layer is a Tendermint BFT PoS chain secured by ROSE stakers. It handles finality and maintains the root of trust for all ParaTimes.
- ParaTime Layer — ParaTimes are parallel execution environments registered with and secured through the Consensus Layer. Each ParaTime can have different execution semantics (EVM, WebAssembly, confidential).
- Sapphire ParaTime — Oasis’s EVM-compatible, confidential ParaTime. Smart contracts on Sapphire can store and process encrypted state using Intel SGX, making on-chain computations confidential by default.
- Emerald ParaTime — A standard EVM-compatible ParaTime without confidential computing, for applications that don’t need privacy.
- ROSE token — Used for staking (securing the Consensus Layer), paying transaction fees, and participating in delegated validation.
- Data tokenization — Oasis has a focus on “data tokenization” — enabling users to tokenize their data and consent to data sharing while retaining ownership and earning from it.

Use Cases
- Confidential smart contracts — Sapphire ParaTime for DeFi or gaming with private on-chain state.
- Private data markets — Users tokenize personal data and control consent.
- Standard EVM DApps — Emerald ParaTime for standard Ethereum-compatible applications.
- Staking — Stake ROSE with validators to earn staking rewards.
- Enterprise data privacy — Enterprise use cases for private computation with blockchain audit trail.
History
- 2018 — Dawn Song (UC Berkeley professor and security researcher) co-founds Oasis Labs. Research foundation in academic security and privacy-preserving computation.
- 2018-09 — Oasis Labs raises $45 million in a Series A funding round from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and other prominent VCs.
- 2020-11-18 — Oasis Network mainnet launches. ROSE token staking goes live.
- 2021 — Emerald EVM ParaTime launches, enabling standard Ethereum dApps on Oasis.
- 2022 — Sapphire confidential EVM ParaTime launches — the most significant technical innovation, enabling encrypted smart contract state. Multiple MEV-resistant and privacy DeFi applications begin deploying.
- 2023–2025 — Oasis continues development. AI-adjacent data privacy narrative gains relevance (Oasis’s “responsible data economy” positioned as infrastructure for private AI training data). Sapphire DeFi ecosystem grows.
Common Misconceptions
“Oasis is only for private applications.”
Oasis supports both standard EVM (Emerald ParaTime — no privacy) and confidential EVM (Sapphire ParaTime — with TEE privacy). Applications can choose their privacy model.
“ROSE is only used for staking.”
ROSE is used for both staking (Consensus Layer security) and for transaction fees across ParaTimes. Different ParaTimes may establish their own internal fee markets settled in ROSE.
Social Media Sentiment
Oasis has strong support from privacy-focused crypto users and institutional investors (a16z). Dawn Song’s academic credentials lend technical credibility. The Sapphire confidential EVM is recognized as a genuine technical innovation. Market sentiment tracks broader Layer 1 cycles; Oasis has not yet achieved the mainstream adoption it targets.
