Definition: Nouns DAO is a community and governance system built around Nouns, a collection of generative pixel-art NFTs on Ethereum. The project auctions a Noun on a recurring daily schedule, and auction ETH is routed to a treasury governed through Nouns DAO rules. Noun holders can vote directly or delegate voting power. The artwork is released under CC0, so the project does not reserve exclusive copyright over the Nouns artwork.
Auctions, Nouns, and the treasury
Each Noun is an ERC-721 NFT with a distinct identifier and artwork assembled from the collection’s visual traits. The auction contract handles bids and settlement; a completed auction sends its proceeds to the DAO treasury under the protocol’s configured rules. That design can give the community a recurring source of funds, but the amount raised depends on demand and ETH prices. A daily auction schedule does not guarantee a fixed income or a particular treasury balance.
CC0 makes it possible for people to reuse Nouns artwork without asking the DAO for copyright permission. It does not give a user ownership of another person’s NFT, nor does it guarantee that every use of a Noun name, brand, or associated service is free of other legal or contractual restrictions.
How proposals are governed
Nouns governance uses on-chain proposals to authorize actions such as treasury spending or protocol changes. The current proposal documentation describes proposal candidates that can be sponsored into a formal proposal, a three-vote threshold for proposing, and a dynamic quorum whose requirement changes with opposition. Holders may vote directly or delegate. The exact rules are implemented in contracts and can change through approved governance upgrades, so older summaries that state a fixed voting period or fixed quorum may no longer describe the active system.
Forks and current limitations
Nouns introduced a fork mechanism so holders could coordinate an exit with a proportional share of DAO assets. The Nouns documentation says the threshold was later set to 100% of total supply following the DUNA transition, effectively disabling the mechanism; a proposed replacement had not been implemented in the documentation reviewed for this update. This is a useful reminder that an exit right described in an older article may not remain available under current contract settings.
The model combines an NFT auction, a shared treasury, and token-based voting. It also inherits familiar trade-offs: voting power follows Noun holdings or delegation, participation can be uneven, auction income fluctuates, and on-chain execution does not remove legal, operational, or human decision-making from the wider project.
Social Media Sentiment
A single r/web3 Reddit post from September 22, 2023 framed the Nouns fork episode in strongly critical terms. It is a one-post reaction during a specific governance dispute, not a current poll or representative measure of Noun holders. The episode shows why exit rules and treasury governance attract attention, but it should not be read as a verdict on every part of the project.
