MetaMask is a self-custody wallet and software interface for managing blockchain accounts and approving transactions. It began as an Ethereum browser wallet and has expanded into a multichain product, while its exact features depend on the app version, network, and region. A wallet interface does not hold coins in a company account: assets are recorded on-chain, and account access depends on the key and recovery method a user selected.
How MetaMask Works
When a decentralized application connects, it can request an address or ask the user to approve a message, token allowance, or transaction. A connection alone is different from signing an action, but a signature can still authorize a consequential operation. Read the request, destination, network, and amount before approval. MetaMask’s extension and mobile wallet can connect to EVM networks; official releases document native support for Solana and Bitcoin. Supported flows and available purchase or swap providers can vary by location and release.
Accounts, Keys, and Recovery
MetaMask offers more than one wallet setup and recovery path. With a Secret Recovery Phrase setup, the phrase is the master backup from which accounts are derived, while the device password unlocks the local installation. MetaMask’s current help material also describes social sign-in options with a different encrypted-backup process. These setups have different recovery dependencies. In either case, anyone who gains the credentials or recovery material may gain control; support cannot simply reverse an on-chain transaction. Keep recovery details private and use only the official app or site.
Swaps and Fees
MetaMask Swaps requests quotes from external liquidity providers and presents a route in the wallet. The published user guide lists a MetaMask fee of 0.875% for swaps, alongside the quoted exchange rate and network fee. Costs may therefore differ from a direct DEX trade, and the final quote can change with liquidity, slippage, network conditions, and route. Sending tokens or using a dApp also requires the relevant network transaction fee; those charges are not the same as MetaMask’s swap fee.
What Changed Recently
MetaMask has been moving beyond its original single-chain extension: official announcements describe Solana support in 2025, Bitcoin support later that year, and multichain account organization. Separately, a September 2026 corporate announcement said Consensys Software Inc. would rebrand as MetaMask and that its protocols and institutional infrastructure business would become a separate Consensys company, with completion expected by year end. This is an announced restructuring; the published date does not itself prove that every legal or operational step has completed.
Security and Tradeoffs
Self-custody gives the user direct control but transfers backup and transaction-review responsibilities to that user. Phishing pages, malicious browser extensions, deceptive signing prompts, unlimited token approvals, compromised devices, and recovery-phrase exposure can all put funds at risk. MetaMask is convenient for dApps and multiple networks, but an extension is not a hardware wallet and a wallet connection does not make a dApp trustworthy. Consider a hardware signer or separate account for valuable assets, and verify addresses and permissions independently.
Social Media Sentiment
A 2025 r/ethereum discussion shows mixed reactions to MetaMask’s multichain account changes: some users valued its familiar core function but described the interface as clunky, while others objected to new network accounts appearing by default. The thread is a small, time-bound sample and should not be read as an overall user satisfaction measure.

Before Using MetaMask
Download it from MetaMask’s official distribution channel, learn which recovery method your wallet uses, and test unfamiliar flows with a small amount. Check the network and asset before sending; read every signature and approval; and compare the quote, service fee, and network fee before a swap.
