Lark Davis

Lark Davis (known online as The Crypto Lark) is a New Zealand-based cryptocurrency influencer, YouTuber, and podcast host who built one of the larger English-language crypto audiences through market analysis and altcoin commentary. He became significantly more controversial in 2022 when on-chain researchers alleged that he had promoted low-cap tokens to his audience while simultaneously selling his own holdings — a practice commonly called a “pump and dump.”

Background and Rise

Davis began publishing crypto content around 2017 and grew a substantial YouTube audience through accessible, hype-friendly coverage of altcoins, DeFi, and market commentary. At peak, his channel accumulated hundreds of thousands of subscribers. He was among the wave of crypto YouTubers who flourished during the 2020–2021 bull market, when audiences were hungry for any voice that could explain which tokens to buy next.

His style was enthusiastic and accessible rather than deeply technical — more accessible than developer-focused content, more opinion-driven than pure charting or on-chain analysis. He reached audiences in New Zealand, Australia, and internationally.

The 2022 Controversy

In 2022, ZachXBT — an on-chain investigator known for tracing crypto misconduct — published a thread alleging that Lark Davis had promoted multiple low-cap altcoins to his audience on Twitter while on-chain data showed his wallets selling those same tokens shortly after or during the promotion.

The pattern alleged: Davis would post bullishly about a token to a large audience, which would drive retail buying and price appreciation. His own wallets would then sell into that liquidity. The tokens would subsequently decline.

Davis disputed the characterization, arguing the sell patterns had other explanations or that he had disclosed positions. The controversy did not result in formal legal action but generated significant community discussion about influencer disclosure standards in crypto.

Influencer Ethics Debate

The Davis situation became one of several 2022 cases — alongside controversies involving other influencers like BitBoy (Ben Armstrong), Ian Balina, and others — that sharpened community discourse around whether crypto influencers should be required to disclose paid promotions and token holdings.

The US SEC subsequently expanded scrutiny of celebrity and influencer crypto promotions, charging Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, and other celebrities for undisclosed promotions, and raising questions about whether influencer token shilling constituted securities fraud.

Position in the Community

Davis remained active in crypto content after 2022, maintaining his platforms. He is generally viewed as a bull-market-era altcoin influencer associated with the 2021 cycle — a segment of crypto media that experienced significant credibility loss during the bear market as the projects many influencers promoted declined steeply.
