Immutable (Gaming Platform)

Immutable is a gaming-infrastructure company whose current product suite includes Immutable Chain, a Layer 2 built for games. The IMX token is a separate asset with its own glossary entry; this page covers the platform and its tools.

Platform, chain, and token are different

Immutable provides infrastructure and developer products for games that use on-chain assets. Its current site describes Immutable Chain as an Ethereum Layer 2 built for games, with developer tools and a player onboarding product called Passport. IMX is the ecosystem’s fungible token; the company or chain name does not mean every game action uses IMX.

Immutable has also operated distinct products under names such as Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM. They have different designs and capabilities. A game’s marketplace, assets, contracts, and fee model should be checked against the product and chain it uses.

What the gaming stack provides

Immutable’s public materials describe Unity and Unreal SDKs, account onboarding through Passport, and gas sponsorship intended to hide transaction fees from players. These are platform features, not a guarantee that every game supports every asset or offers identical fee treatment. Studios choose which features they integrate and how game accounts and items work.

When a game represents an item on-chain, a token can enable transfers or marketplace activity under its contract. It does not itself guarantee that a game remains online, that an item works in every game, or that a player owns the artwork’s copyright.

Questions to check when evaluating a game

  • Identify the exact chain and product named in the game’s wallet or marketplace.
  • Check whether the account is self-custodied or managed through a platform login, and how recovery works.
  • Read the game’s rules for asset transfers, marketplace access, gas sponsorship, and shutdowns.
  • Keep IMX token functions separate from company services and game-specific items.

Immutable’s proposition depends on studios shipping games that people continue to use. A growing developer ecosystem or transaction count alone does not prove sustained player demand or a particular game’s success.
