Hemi Network (HEMI)

Hemi is the first Layer 2 to be simultaneously secured by both Bitcoin and Ethereum — inheriting the finality and security of the world’s two largest blockchains while offering EVM-compatible smart contract execution. Most L2s choose one security source: Optimism and Arbitrum inherit Ethereum’s security; BitVM-based chains try to inherit Bitcoin’s. Hemi does both through its “Bitcoin Superscaling” approach and Proof of Publication (PoP) consensus — miners continuously publish state proofs to the Bitcoin blockchain, anchoring Hemi’s history into Bitcoin’s immutable ledger. At the same time, Hemi operates as an Ethereum L2 for EVM execution, giving developers the familiar Solidity smart contract environment. This dual-anchoring creates a network where assets can natively bridge between Bitcoin and Ethereum ecosystems without the counterparty risk of centralized bridges.

How It Works

Proof of Publication (PoP) consensus:

Hemi miners (called PoP miners) continuously submit cryptographic proofs of Hemi’s state to the Bitcoin network. These publications are permanent — anyone can verify Hemi’s entire history using only Bitcoin blocks, making Hemi Bitcoin-finalized.

EVM execution layer:

Despite being Bitcoin-anchored, Hemi runs a full Ethereum Virtual Machine. Solidity contracts deploy identically to Ethereum mainnet. DeFi protocols, NFT platforms, and dApps can deploy on Hemi with minimal code changes.

Tunnels — native BTC/ETH bridge:

Hemi’s “Tunnels” are native bridges allowing BTC, ETH, and ERC-20s to move between chains without external bridge contracts. Users deposit BTC into a Bitcoin tunnel address and receive tunneled BTC (tBTC) on Hemi for use in EVM DeFi.

Bitcoin Superscaling:

Hemi positions itself as scaling Bitcoin — not just holding BTC but enabling it to participate in DeFi as programmable collateral, enabling use cases impossible on Bitcoin’s base layer.

  • Cross-chain bridging — Native BTC/ETH tunnels for asset movement between ecosystems
  • PoP mining — PoP miners earn HEMI rewards for securing the network by publishing to Bitcoin
  • Smart contract execution — Full EVM environment for deploying complex applications with Bitcoin security

History

  • 2022 — Hemi Labs founded; concept development for Bitcoin+Ethereum hybrid L2
  • 2024 — Testnet launches; PoP mining program begins allowing early miners to earn points

Common Misconceptions

“Hemi is just another Ethereum L2.” Hemi’s Bitcoin anchoring through PoP distinguishes it fundamentally — it’s the only EVM L2 with state proofs published to the Bitcoin blockchain.

“Using Hemi requires technical Bitcoin knowledge.” Hemi’s EVM environment is identical to Ethereum from a developer perspective. Bitcoin security happens at the protocol level without developer intervention.
