Greg Solano

Greg Solano (pseudonym: Gargamel) is the co-founder of Yuga Labs — alongside Wylie Aronow (Gordon Goner), Zeshan Ali, and Kerem Atalay — the company that launched the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) in April 2021, acquired CryptoPunks and Meebits from Larva Labs in March 2022 for a reported $100+ million, launched the Otherside metaverse and Otherdeeds virtual land NFT sale in April 2022 (which grossed ~$320 million in a single weekend), and raised $450 million from a16z in March 2022 at a $4 billion valuation — making Yuga Labs the dominant NFT and web3 media company of the 2021-2022 cycle; Solano’s real identity was revealed by BuzzFeed News on February 4, 2022.

Background

Greg Solano was a writer and editor before co-founding Yuga Labs. He served as a literary editor and had a background in creative writing and English literature — a background that informed BAYC’s lore-first, storytelling-driven approach to NFT world-building. Solano is Venezuelan-American.

Yuga Labs Co-Founding

Solano co-founded Yuga Labs in early 2021 with:

  • Wylie Aronow (“Gordon Goner”) — the other primary public co-founder.
  • Zeshan Ali (“Emperor Tomato Ketchup”) — a third co-founder.
  • Kerem Atalay (“No Sass”) — fourth co-founder.

The four founders, working under pseudonyms, conceptualized the Bored Ape Yacht Club as a 10,000-NFT collection of generatively assembled ape illustrations. Their goal — stated in retrospect — was to build a brand with genuine utility and community rather than just collectibles.

Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC)

Launch: April 23, 2021. Mint price: 0.08 ETH (~$192 at the time).

The collection of 10,000 algorithmically generated “bored ape” PFP (profile picture) NFTs sold out in 12 hours. What happened next was unprecedented in NFT history:

  • BAYC became a membership club with real utility — holders got access to a “Bathroom” collaborative graffiti canvas, exclusive events, and a private Discord.
  • Celebrity adoption (Justin Bieber, Eminem, Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, and dozens of others) drove mainstream attention.
  • Floor prices rose from 0.08 ETH to over 100 ETH at peak (~$280,000+ per ape at ETH’s 2021 high).
  • Commercial rights — BAYC holders retained the right to commercialize their specific ape’s image. This enabled holders to spin off restaurants, merchandise lines, and media projects using their ape IP.

Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) and Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC)

  • BAKC: Free-to-claim dog NFTs airdropped to BAYC holders — a community appreciation drop.
  • MAYC: 20,000 Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs launched August 2021. Half were sold in a Dutch auction (raising ~$96M in ~1 hour); half were airdropped to existing BAYC holders as “mutant serums.”

Acquisitions — CryptoPunks and Meebits

In March 2022, Yuga Labs acquired CryptoPunks and Meebits IP from Larva Labs for a reported $100+ million deal — combining the two most historically significant NFT collections under one company.

After acquisition, Yuga Labs extended full commercial IP rights to CryptoPunks holders — a significant policy change from Larva Labs’ restrictive IP approach.

Otherside and Otherdeeds

The Otherdeed for Otherside virtual land NFT sale launched April 30, 2022:

  • Approximately 55,000 Otherdeeds sold at 305 APE (ApeCoin) each (~$5,800 at mint time).
  • Total sale of approximately $300–$320 million.
  • The sale was so heavily trafficked that Ethereum gas prices spiked to record levels, with some users paying more in gas fees than in NFT value.

The Otherside metaverse itself remains in active development as of 2024, built on the Improbable/M2 engine.

Identity Revelation

Yuga Labs’ four founders operated pseudonymously under their handles. BuzzFeed News published an article on February 4, 2022 that identified Solano and Aronow by name. The revelation was controversial — criticized by many in the NFT community as a privacy violation against pseudonymous creators. Solano and Aronow subsequently confirmed their identities publicly.

Common Misconceptions

  • “BAYC was instantly successful.” — While BAYC did sell out in 12 hours, the floor price was under 1 ETH for the first several weeks. The celebrity-driven explosion happened approximately 3 months after launch.
  • “Greg Solano (Gargamel) wrote the BAYC art.” — The illustrations were created by a contracted artist known as Seneca. The founders are responsible for concept, lore, brand, and business structure. Solano’s writing background contributed to the storytelling and community narrative.
