The Graph Foundation

The Graph Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports The Graph ecosystem. It is distinct from The Graph protocol and from the network’s independent participants, including Indexers, Curators, and Delegators. The Foundation’s current mandate includes directly operating, maintaining, and developing parts of The Graph network, a broader role than simply coordinating grants or community programs.

Foundation and Protocol Roles

The Graph is an indexing protocol that lets applications query blockchain data through subgraphs and related network services. Indexers operate infrastructure and serve queries; Curators signal which subgraphs they consider useful; Delegators allocate stake to Indexers. The Foundation’s work can support the network, but those participant roles and the protocol itself should not be treated as departments of the Foundation.

Governance has also changed how some resources are allocated. In 2026, The Graph Council approved GIP-0089, which redirects 20% of existing issuance to an Innovation Allocation for work on the network. The proposal does not describe a 20% increase in total issuance. The Council remains responsible for oversight of the allocation.

What the Change Means

A Foundation that operates and maintains network components may be able to contribute more directly to development and reliability. It also makes questions about accountability, operational concentration, and independent oversight more important. The Foundation’s expanded role does not alone prove that the whole network is centralized or decentralized; users should look at actual control over upgrades, infrastructure, funding, and participant choice.

  • One independent forum review of The Graph’s 2026 changes raised concerns about the Foundation’s direct operating role, the new resource allocation, migration work, and service reliability.
