Fantom

Fantom is a high-performance, EVM-compatible blockchain that uses its own aBFT (asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant) consensus mechanism called Lachesis. Unlike traditional blockchain consensus, Lachesis achieves near-instant finality (1–2 seconds) at high throughput without sacrificing decentralization. Fantom found its peak as a DeFi hub in 2021 — largely driven by legendary DeFi developer Andre Cronje — before declining significantly in 2022. Fantom’s evolution into Sonic (a new chain/technology layer) represents its attempt at a comeback.

Technology

Lachesis Consensus (aBFT)

Traditional BFT consensus requires sequential, synchronous communication between validators. Lachesis is asynchronous — validators don’t need to communicate in sync, enabling:

  • 1-2 second confirmation finality
  • High throughput (theoretical 25,000+ TPS under lab conditions; practical ~2,000-4,000)
  • Leaderless: no distinguished “block proposer” per slot as in standard BFT

Directed Acyclic Graph Structure

Fantom’s consensus records events in a DAG rather than a linear chain. Each validator records “event blocks” that reference previous events; the Lachesis algorithm determines consensus order across this graph. The result is that many events can be processed in parallel rather than sequentially.

Opera Mainnet

Fantom’s production network launched in December 2019. It is EVM-compatible (runs Solidity contracts), supports MetaMask, and has full Ethereum tooling compatibility. Gas fees are paid in FTM.

History

Date Event
2018 Fantom Foundation founded; Ahn Byung Ik CEO
Jun 2018 FTM token sale raises $40M
Dec 2019 Opera mainnet launch
2021 Andre Cronje joins as lead developer; TVL explodes to $10B+
Jan 2022 Fantom launches incentive program alongside Andre Cronje’s “solidly” protocol
Mar 2022 Andre Cronje quits DeFi; Fantom TVL collapses from $12B to under $1B within weeks
2022 FTM falls 90%+ from peak
2023-2024 Sonic development announced; new chain with improved throughput and SVM (Sonic Virtual Machine)

Andre Cronje Effect

Andre Cronje, creator of Yearn Finance, Keep3r, and dozens of other DeFi protocols, chose to build primarily on Fantom in 2021. His presence attracted:

  • Other DeFi developers (“DeFi 2.0” protocols: Solidly, Tomb Finance, SpookySwap)
  • $10B+ TVL at peak
  • FTM reaching ~$3.46 ATH (Jan 2022)

Cronje’s March 2022 retirement announcement caused immediate multi-billion loss in TVL and a 40%+ FTM price drop in 24 hours — demonstrating fragile developer-dependent ecosystem dynamics.

Tokenomics

  • Max Supply: 3.175 billion FTM
  • Total Supply: ~3.175 billion (max already minted)
  • Utility: Gas fees, staking (delegated or solo), governance
  • Staking: Stake FTM to validators; earn staking rewards; lock 1-365 days; minimum 1 FTM to delegate

Sonic (Rebranding / New Chain)

Fantom announced Sonic — a new chain with:

  • SVM (Sonic Virtual Machine): Upgraded EVM with ~10x performance improvements claimed
  • Up to 10,000 TPS target with sub-second finality
  • New gateway connecting Sonic to Ethereum

Sonic launched as a new chain with FTM/S token bridge. Andre Cronje returned in 2024 to lead development, generating renewed community interest.

Social Media Sentiment

Fantom’s community is passionate but burned by the 2022 collapse. The Sonic rebranding/upgrade and Andre Cronje’s return generated genuine excitement in 2024. Community is split: longtime holders who saw 90%+ drawdowns vs. new participants excited about Sonic’s technical improvements. Compared frequently to other EVM L1s (Avalanche, BNB Chain) in performance benchmarks.
