Doginals

Doginals is an open-source minter and protocol for inscriptions on Dogecoin. Its Ordinals-inspired format stores content in Dogecoin transaction data, and compatible indexers parse the transactions to display the resulting inscriptions. The term can also refer to inscriptions made with this tooling. An inscription is not an NFT minted by an Ethereum-style smart contract: Dogecoin records the underlying transactions, while indexers determine how inscription data is interpreted and displayed.

How Doginals work

The original public Doginals repository describes an inscription format that stores content in Dogecoin transaction data. It documents multipart payloads, pay-to-script-hash (P2SH) envelopes and chained transactions. Indexers read those transaction patterns and decide how to display or classify the resulting artifacts. The exact behavior depends on the protocol implementation and indexer being used.

Doginals, NFTs and DRC-20

Doginals can carry media or structured data, but the inscription itself is not an ERC-721 or ERC-1155 smart-contract token. DRC-20 is a separate convention for interpreting some Dogecoin inscriptions as fungible token operations. It relies on indexers to reconstruct balances and is not a feature enforced by Dogecoin consensus rules. These distinctions matter when comparing displayed ownership or token balances across services.

Limitations and risks

Dogecoin transactions record the underlying data, while third-party indexers and marketplaces provide the interface and interpretation. Different tools may support different inscription formats or indexing rules, and an inscription does not guarantee that an app, wallet or market will recognize or display it. Check the exact transaction and the service’s supported format before relying on a displayed artifact.
