Celsius Network was a centralized cryptocurrency platform that offered yield-bearing Earn accounts, loans against crypto collateral, and custody services. It is separate from Celsius Holdings, the beverage company. The old Celsius consumer lending and app business is no longer operating; creditor distributions continue under its bankruptcy reorganization.
How the platform worked
Customers transferred crypto to Celsius and could enroll in Earn, borrow against deposited assets, or use custody services. Celsius used customer assets in its business and marketed rewards and safety claims. That arrangement exposed customers to counterparty risk: customers depended on the company to manage assets and honor withdrawals, rather than holding every asset in a wallet whose keys they controlled.
Withdrawal halt and bankruptcy
Celsius halted customer withdrawals in June 2022 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2022. The company later emerged from Chapter 11 on January 31, 2024 under a reorganization plan; the mobile and web apps shut down on February 29, 2024. This means Celsius is not an active retail crypto lender like the service customers used before the freeze. Some creditors continue to receive distributions through the administrator and distribution partners.
Legal findings and the CEL token
Founder Alex Mashinsky pleaded guilty in December 2024 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in May 2025 for commodities and securities fraud. The U.S. Department of Justice said he misled customers about Celsius’s finances and the safety and sustainability of its rewards, and described a scheme to manipulate the CEL token price using purchases that at times were funded with customer deposits. These findings explain why Celsius should not be reduced to a case of market volatility alone.
Creditor distributions
On January 22, 2026, the distribution administrator announced a fourth distribution of $344.4 million to eligible creditors, with initial attempts scheduled for February and rolling attempts during the first quarter. That was a projected schedule, not proof that every creditor received funds or that all claims are settled. Eligibility, claim class, jurisdiction, prior payments, and completed identity checks affect each case. There is no single recovery percentage that applies to every former customer; use the official claims portal and notices for account-specific information.
Social Media Sentiment
A small r/IonicDigitalStock discussion about possible future Celsius estate distributions contains questions about whether and when another payment might occur. The original post includes its own speculative recovery estimates, and commenters ask where the figures came from; other comments express interest in further payments or say they would treat them as a bonus. Those projections are not official guidance, and this thread is a small, creditor-focused sample rather than a representative view of all Celsius users.
