Bitwise Asset Management is a specialist digital-asset manager whose products include exchange-traded products, funds, and separately managed strategies. Its Bitcoin product BITB is one offering within that broader business; Bitwise, BITB, and direct ownership of bitcoin are three different things.
What Bitwise does
Bitwise focuses on crypto investment products and research. Its current product menu spans exposure to individual digital assets, crypto-sector companies, and broader strategies. The exact legal form, fee, trading venue, and risks depend on the specific product, so a general description of Bitwise should not be treated as a description of every fund or account it manages.
The company says it launched its first crypto index fund in 2017. Product pages and prospectuses are more useful than old portfolio summaries when checking whether a particular offering is an exchange-traded product, a registered investment company, a private fund, or a separately managed account.
BITB is not the whole firm
BITB is Bitwise’s spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product listed in the United States. It provides market exposure through shares that trade in a brokerage account. A share is not a bitcoin withdrawal right to the holder’s personal wallet, and the price of a share can differ from the value of the underlying bitcoin.
The trust holds bitcoin through custody arrangements and pays expenses from its assets, which gradually reduces the bitcoin amount represented by each share. Investors should consult the current prospectus for the current sponsor, custody structure, fee, and risk disclosures. These details can change.
Questions to ask about any product
Before comparing products, identify what the vehicle actually holds, how it is regulated, who acts as sponsor or adviser, how it is custodied, and what the full costs are. “Crypto ETF” is often used informally, but Bitwise’s own disclosures distinguish exchange-traded products that are not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 from registered funds. The label alone does not establish that products have the same protections.
Social Media Sentiment
- A January 2024 r/Bitcoin discussion about Bitwise publishing a BITB holdings address included interest in public verification as well as questions about how to interpret the address and custody setup. It is an early product-launch discussion with mixed user comments, not a current survey or proof that any custody system is risk-free. Read the BITB discussion.
