Abstract Chain

Most crypto chains are built by developers, for developers. Abstract was built by the team behind Pudgy Penguins — one of the top NFT collections with arguably the best brand recognition in crypto — with a different target user in mind: normal people. Abstract’s entire design philosophy is consumer-first: the onboarding process uses a global smart wallet that doesn’t require users to manage seed phrases, the app store features curated consumer apps rather than raw DeFi protocols, and the chain comes packaged with pop culture NFT culture and aesthetic that resonates beyond the hardcore crypto demographic. Abstract launched in early 2025 backed by Igloo Inc. (the company that revived Pudgy Penguins and turned them into a lifestyle brand), with a ZK-powered architecture from the same technology stack as zkSync.

Background: The Pudgy Penguins Connection

The following sections cover this in detail.

Igloo Inc.

  • Pudgy Penguins — 8,888 NFT collection that became one of the most recognized crypto brands globally
  • Pudgy Toys — physical toys sold in major retail chains (Walmart, Target), introducing Pudgy Penguins to non-crypto consumers
  • Pudgy World — digital collectible game on Bitcoin L2
  • Abstract — their L2 blockchain initiative

Luca Netz (CEO of Igloo Inc.) leveraged the brands and community from Pudgy Penguins to launch Abstract — the thesis being that the Pudgy community is already consumer-oriented, and Abstract can be the chain that brings that audience on-chain.

Why this matters

Technical Architecture

The protocol is built around the following components.

ZK Stack (zkSync)

  • ZK (zero-knowledge) validity proofs secure state on Ethereum
  • Instant transaction finality (no 7-day fraud proof window)
  • Full EVM compatibility via zkEVM

What ZK Stack provides:

  • Ethereum security through validity proofs
  • High throughput and low gas fees
  • Ability to customize chain parameters while inheriting zkSync’s security

Abstract Global Wallet (AGW)

Problem it solves:

Traditional crypto onboarding: Install MetaMask → write down 24 seed words → fund with ETH → navigate to dApp → approve contract → transact. Every step loses users.

AGW approach:

  • Create a wallet with email/social login (no seed phrase to write down)
  • The “wallet” is a smart contract account — no private key management in the traditional sense
  • One wallet, all Abstract apps — you don’t create a new wallet for every app
  • Session keys: apps can get time-limited signing permission without prompting every transaction
  • Gas sponsorship: apps can pay gas on behalf of users

Example UX: Open an Abstract game, click “Sign in with Google,” start playing. No seed phrases, no ETH for gas, no browser extension.

Consumer App Ecosystem

Abstract explicitly positions itself as an “app store” for consumer crypto:

Ecosystem categories:

  • Social apps: On-chain social graphs, content monetization
  • Gaming: Casual games, trading card games, collectibles
  • NFT platforms: Native minting and trading
  • DeFi (secondary): Basic trading functionality but not the primary focus

Curation: Abstract has a curated approach to its ecosystem — applications go through a vetting process rather than being permissionless. This is a consumer product philosophy.

Notable early apps:

  • Pudgy World: Digital pets/collectibles from Igloo Inc.
  • Multiple gaming and social applications launched at mainnet

ABSTRACT Token

Status: ABSTRACT token launched at mainnet

Token details:

  • Used for governance and protocol operations
  • Airdrop distributed to early testnet users and NFT holders
  • Listed on major exchanges

Abstract vs. Other Consumer L2s

Chain Consumer Focus Technology Ecosystem
Abstract Very high ZK Stack Curated consumer apps
Base Moderate Optimistic Large DeFi + social
Zora NFT/creator Optimistic (Base) Creator economy
Immutable Gaming zkEVM Gaming assets

Abstract most directly competes with Base for consumer mindshare, but Base is more general-purpose and permissionless while Abstract is more curated and consumer-UX-focused.

Risks and Questions

Curation tradeoff: A curated ecosystem can deliver better UX but may limit developer freedom and decentralization compared to permissionless chains.

Wallet abstraction complexity: AGW relies on smart contract wallets. Key recovery, custody models, and regulatory treatment of non-custodial smart wallets are still open questions.

Consumer crypto market: “Consumer crypto” has been predicted to be “the next big thing” for several years. Abstract is betting on this wave arriving — though multiple previous attempts to bring normal consumers on-chain (Dapper, Coinbase Wallet, previous gaming chains) had limited success.

NFT brand correlation: Abstract is associated with Pudgy Penguins. If the NFT market continues to decline, the brand story weakens. If Pudgy Penguins culture remains strong, it’s a significant distribution advantage.

How to Use Abstract

  1. Get ETH via
  2. Visit abs.xyz and create an Abstract Global Wallet (email or social login)
  3. Bridge ETH to Abstract or receive from another Abstract user
  4. Browse the Abstract app ecosystem

Store ETH on hardware:

Social Media Sentiment

Abstract generated strong launch buzz driven by Pudgy Penguins’ existing community and cultural cachet. The AGW demo was widely shared — the UX genuinely impressed people who watched “normal” onboarding flows. The Pudgy connection made Abstract feel different from “yet another EVM L2” — it came with brand recognition, toy store presence, and a built-in audience. Criticism comes from two angles: (1) Technical: “AGW is great but so is Base’s smart wallet infrastructure — what’s the concrete differentiation?”; (2) Fundamental: “Consumer crypto has failed many times — what makes this attempt different?” The bulls argue Igloo/Pudgy demonstrated something rare in crypto: actual mass-market consumer brand building, and Abstract is the natural extension of this for on-chain applications. The skeptics note that consumer dApps are hard regardless of the chain and that Pudgy toys in Walmart ≠ Pudgy on-chain users. Broadly, Abstract is viewed as the most credible “consumer crypto” bet in the current cycle.
