The OP Superchain is Optimism Labs’ vision for a horizontally scalable network of OP Stack-based Layer 2 chains that share security infrastructure, interoperability bridges, and governance — functioning as a unified “internet of Layer 2s” rather than isolated networks.
The Superchain Concept
Traditional Layer 2 scaling creates fragmented ecosystems: each rollup has its own bridge, liquidity pools, and governance — making cross-rollup interactions slow and expensive.
The Superchain solves this by defining common standards:
- Unified bridge: A single canonical bridge contract on Ethereum for all Superchain members
- Shared sequencer (future): A decentralized sequencer that services multiple chains simultaneously
- Cross-chain messaging: Low-latency, trust-minimized messaging between all Superchain chains
- Shared security: All chains anchored to Ethereum with the same fraud proof mechanism
Superchain Members
The Superchain includes all chains built on the OP Stack that’ve opted into the ecosystem:
| Chain | Use Case |
|---|---|
| OP Mainnet | General DeFi and dApps |
| Base (Coinbase) | Consumer apps, USDC-native ecosystem |
| Zora | NFT and creator economy |
| Mode | DeFi-focused with sequencer fee sharing |
| Fraxtal | Frax ecosystem chain |
| Mint | NFT chain |
| Redstone | Onchain gaming |
Revenue Sharing (Law of Chains)
OP Labs introduced the “Law of Chains” — a governance framework for how Superchain member chains contribute to the Optimism Collective:
- A portion of sequencer revenue from each chain goes to the Optimism treasury
- In return, chains receive OP token allocations, joint marketing, and protocol upgrades
This creates an economic unity across all chains in the Superchain.
Interop: The Next Phase
The immediate Superchain is already deployed, but native interoperability is the next milestone:
- Current: Bridges between OP chains are fast but still require 7-minute fraud proof windows
- Future: “Chain-native interop” allows sub-second cross-chain transactions between Superchain members
- OP Labs target: A user on Base can interact with a dApp on OP Mainnet in one transaction with no bridging UI
The OP Stack
Any chain can join the Superchain by building with the OP Stack:
- Open-source rollup framework maintained by OP Labs
- Used by Coinbase (Base), Worldcoin, Kraken, Sony (Soneium), and many others
- Becoming the dominant L2 framework rival to Arbitrum Orbit
