Tokenized treasuries are blockchain tokens that represent ownership of real-world US government debt — typically Treasury bills (T-bills), bonds, or money market funds holding government securities — giving crypto users access to risk-free rates on-chain.
Why Tokenized Treasuries Matter
From 2022–2025, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates significantly:
- T-bills yielded 4–5%+ annually
- DeFi stablecoin yields collapsed post-2021 to near-zero in many cases
This created a massive opportunity: on-chain dollars could earn nothing, while off-chain dollars earned 4–5% in T-bills. Tokenized treasuries bridge this gap — giving DeFi users yield without exiting to a bank.
Major Issuers
| Product | Issuer | Chain | Yield Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| BUIDL | BlackRock + Securitize | Ethereum | Money market (T-bills) |
| USDY | Ondo Finance | Multi-chain | Short-term T-bills |
| OUSG | Ondo Finance | Ethereum | BlackRock money market fund |
| FOBXX | Franklin Templeton | Stellar, Polygon | US Govt money market |
| sDAI / sUSDe | MakerDAO, Ethena | Ethereum | Partially T-bill backed |
| TBILL | OpenEden | Ethereum | T-bill fund |
How They Work
- User deposits USDC or USD with the issuer (KYC required for most)
- Issuer buys T-bills / money market securities with the USD
- Issuer mints an on-chain token representing the user’s share
- Token either:
Accrues value: Token price increases as yield accumulates (e.g., OUSG)
Distributes yield: Periodic USDC distributions (e.g., USDY) - User can use tokens as DeFi collateral (on supported platforms)
Use in DeFi
Tokenized treasuries have become major DeFi collateral:
- Maker/Sky: OUSG and BUIDL accepted as collateral for DAI
- Morpho: USDY and BUIDL used in lending pools
- Aave: Exploring RWA collateral onboarding
Market Size
By 2024, the tokenized treasury market exceeded $2 billion in on-chain AUM, with BUIDL becoming the largest product within months of launch due to BlackRock’s institutional distribution.
