Bitmap (Bitmap)

Bitmap is a Bitcoin Ordinals-based metaverse protocol where each Bitcoin block is treated as a piece of virtual land — block “parcels” subdivided by the transactions within that block, which can be claimed via a specific Ordinals inscription format. Bitmap theory draws an analogy: Bitcoin blocks are immutable historical records, and therefore constitute the most permanent basis for virtual land ownership.

How It Works

Bitmap Theory:

  • Each Bitcoin block (there are 800,000+ blocks) is a unique piece of “land” in the Bitmap metaverse
  • Within each block, individual transactions form “districts” — parcels of land proportional to how many transactions the block contains
  • A block can be claimed by inscribing a text Ordinal with the format: {block_number}.bitmap

Claiming:

  1. User inscribes the text {block_number}.bitmap (e.g., 800000.bitmap) as a Bitcoin Ordinal
  2. First valid inscription of that format owns the block
  3. Most low-numbered Bitcoin blocks (blocks 0-100,000) were claimed quickly

Metaverse Applications:

  • Bitmap acts as infrastructure; third-party developers build “metaverse” applications on top
  • Projects like Bitmap SV, Bitmap City, and others build visualizations or games using Bitmap parcels

Context

Bitmap emerged during the Bitcoin Ordinals boom of 2023 as one of the more conceptually novel Ordinals projects. Unlike profile picture NFTs, Bitmap proposed a standard for turning Bitcoin’s existing block history into digital real estate — a concept with precedent in Ethereum’s Decentraland (MANA) and The Sandbox (SAND) but grounded in Bitcoin’s native primitives.

Social Media Sentiment

Bitmap generated significant discussion in the Bitcoin Ordinals community on X/Twitter in mid-2023. Lower block numbers (especially early blocks from Bitcoin’s genesis era) commanded higher prices due to historical significance. The metaverse angle attracted Decentraland and Sandbox users interested in Bitcoin-native land. Critics called it speculative land-grabbing with no guaranteed metaverse adoption. By 2024, trading volume cooled as broader Ordinals hype moderated.
