Numerai

Numerai is a data-science tournament platform associated with a quantitative hedge-fund business. Participants build models and submit financial-market predictions for scoring; optional staking links submissions to NMR payouts or burns under the applicable rules.

Key Features

Feature Description
Platform Financial prediction tournaments and model scoring
Classic Numerai provides stock-market datasets
Signals Participants contribute stock signals
Crypto Separate crypto signals and a public Meta Model
Token Optional prediction staking uses NMR

How the Tournament Works

Numerai provides financial datasets for training and scoring models. Participants submit prediction files. Code can remain on their own infrastructure; optional Model Uploads instead gives Numerai access to an uploaded model.

Staking is optional, and unstaked submissions can still be scored. Staked predictions contribute to the stake-weighted Meta Model used by the fund. Scores and the applicable rules determine NMR payouts or burns. The relevant round controls scoring and its time horizon; a universal four-week description is inaccurate.

Platform, Token and Fund

Numeraire (NMR) is the token associated with the platform. Numerai states that token holdings give no equity or voting rights in its business. Fund investment and tournament participation are separate arrangements. Its Crypto competition does not mean the hedge fund trades cryptocurrencies or uses the Crypto Meta Model.

History and Current Transition

Numerai traces its open data-science approach to 2015 and identifies Richard Craib as its founder. Its February 2026 NumerCon report describes further automation and agent tooling; project descriptions are not independent performance endorsements.

As of 17 October 2026, Unity/Classic v6 data is available. Official documentation schedules v6 submissions for 6 November and keeps existing live rounds on their applicable rules until cutover. A phased Signals merger is also announced. The v6 schema includes stock identifiers and dates, so an old claim that every dataset is permanently anonymous or entirely encrypted is inaccurate.

Criticisms and Risks

Model results can change across data versions and market conditions. A strong backtest or past score does not guarantee future accuracy, payouts, or profits. Participants also face data-preparation and model risk, possible overfitting, changing tournament rules, and—if they stake—potential loss of NMR. Numerai’s own documentation describes evolving dataset versions; users should read the current tournament rules and data documentation before participating.

Social Media Sentiment

A small June 2024 r/quant discussion mixed praise for the tournament and community with concern about NMR volatility. This dated sample does not measure current community sentiment.
