Nader Al-Naji is a technology entrepreneur known for founding BitClout, the social-token project later renamed DeSo. The project’s launch drew criticism over tokenized profiles created around public figures and early limits on withdrawals; the SEC’s later civil case against Al-Naji and related defendants was dismissed with prejudice in March 2026.
BitClout and DeSo
BitClout appeared publicly in 2021 as a social network built around profiles, posts, and tradable creator coins. Early coverage reported that profiles for well-known people were present without their participation and that users initially faced restrictions on withdrawing funds. Those launch choices prompted questions about consent, custody, and how the platform represented people who had not joined it.
The project subsequently adopted the name DeSo, short for Decentralized Social, and described its network as infrastructure for social applications. Its roadmap places research and development before the public BitClout launch. That project description is not independent evidence that on-chain social systems have achieved broad adoption or solved moderation, privacy, and scalability concerns.
SEC case
In 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil enforcement action involving Al-Naji, DeSo Foundation, and other defendants. On March 12, 2026, the SEC announced that the parties had jointly stipulated to dismiss the action with prejudice. The dismissal ends that case; it is not a court finding that the original allegations were proven or disproven. The SEC also said its case-specific decision did not necessarily state its position in other cases.
Social Media Sentiment
A March 2021 r/CryptoCurrency discussion records skeptical reactions to BitClout’s early launch, including concerns about consent and the ability to withdraw. It is a historical discussion from the launch period, not a measure of present-day opinion about DeSo or a representative survey of users.
