KAS is the native proof-of-work currency of Kaspa, a high-throughput blockchain that implements GHOSTDAG (Greedy Heaviest-Observed Sub-DAG) consensus — allowing blocks to be produced at 10 blocks per second (versus Bitcoin’s one block per ~600 seconds) without orphaning parallel blocks by incorporating all valid parallel-mined blocks into a DAG structure that resolves ordering through the “heaviest observed sub-DAG” rule — achieving high throughput while maintaining PoW security properties, mined via kHeavyHash (compatible with GPU and ASIC hardware), with a deflationary emission schedule (monthly halving model) and approximately 28.7 billion maximum KAS supply.
For Kaspa’s GHOSTDAG architecture, DAG consensus, and full history, see the Kaspa entry.

Use Cases
- Payments — High-throughput, fast-confirmation PoW payments with near-instant block times.
- GPU/ASIC mining — KAS is mined using Nvidia/AMD GPUs and custom kHeavyHash ASICs.
- DAG research — Kaspa serves as the primary production implementation proving DAG-based PoW consensus at scale.
History
- 2021-11-07 — Kaspa mainnet launches with a fair launch (no premine, no ICO). Yonatan Sompolinsky (Harvard/IOHK) who co-authored the original GHOSTDAG academic paper is associated with the Kaspa project.
- 2023 — Kaspa gains significant attention as KAS price surges and it becomes one of the top GPU-mined cryptocurrencies. kHeavyHash ASICs begin shipping.
- 2024 — KAS reaches an all-time high near $0.20. The Kaspa community discusses smart contract layer additions (KIP-9, KasVM) to enable DeFi on top of the Kaspa DAG base layer.
