Fred Ehrsam

Fred Ehrsam co-founded Coinbase with Brian Armstrong in 2012 — serving as President until 2017 and playing a key role in the exchange’s design, regulatory strategy, and product growth — and subsequently co-founded Paradigm in 2018 with Matt Huang, establishing what became the most influential crypto-focused venture capital firm, known for its research-driven investment approach, technical team contributions, and portfolio including Uniswap, Compound, MakerDAO, Optimism, and Blur; Ehrsam remains a co-managing partner at Paradigm.

Background

Fred Ehrsam grew up in Massachusetts and attended Duke University, where he studied computer science and economics. After college, he worked as a foreign exchange trader at Goldman Sachs in New York. In 2011, he discovered Bitcoin and became deeply interested in its monetary properties and potential. He connected with Brian Armstrong through Reddit’s Bitcoin community in early 2012 and joined Armstrong to co-found Coinbase.

Coinbase (2012–2017)

Ehrsam served as President of Coinbase from founding (2012) through late 2017. His contribution was primarily on the business and product side while Armstrong focused on engineering:

  • Regulatory strategy — Ehrsam was central to Coinbase’s approach of proactively seeking compliance and regulatory licenses rather than operating in a legal gray area. This “compliant first” strategy meant slower initial growth but enabled Coinbase to become a regulated entity in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Product design — Coinbase’s early user experience emphasizing simplicity for first-time buyers was shaped during Ehrsam’s tenure.
  • Fundraising — Orchestrated early funding rounds including from Y Combinator (2012) and Andreessen Horowitz ($25M Series B in 2013).
  • Institutional focus — Helped build Coinbase’s institutional trading product (Coinbase Pro and Prime precursors).

Ehrsam departed Coinbase’s executive role in January 2017 but remained on the board. Coinbase went public via direct listing on Nasdaq in April 2021 at a ~$86B valuation.

Paradigm (2018–present)

Ehrsam co-founded Paradigm in September 2018 with Matt Huang. His vision was a crypto investment vehicle that actively participated in protocol research and development rather than passive capital provision. Paradigm’s portfolio is covered in the Matt Huang entry.

Ehrsam has written influential blog posts on crypto topics:

  • “Blockchain governance: Programming our future” (2017) — Widely-read analysis of on-chain governance tradeoffs.
  • “The next great frontier” (2016) — User-owned games concept that anticipated play-to-earn and NFT gaming.
  • “Ethereum is the forefront of digital currency” (2016) — Early case for Ethereum’s programmable money.

Common Misconceptions

  • “Ehrsam invented the technical parts of Coinbase.” — Brian Armstrong handled the engineering; Ehrsam’s role was business, product, regulatory, and fundraising.
  • “Ehrsam left Coinbase on bad terms.” — He remains a board member and publicly supportive of Coinbase; the departure appears to have been principled transition to focus on investing.
