Definition:
Degen culture (from “degenerate”) is a crypto-native subculture and identity built around high-risk, high-speed financial speculation — specifically the practice of depositing into unaudited yield protocols, aping into low-cap tokens based on incomplete information, trading memecoins with excessive leverage, and treating financial losses as inevitable rites of passage rather than failures — while maintaining deep knowledge of the underlying systems and an ironic, self-aware attitude about the inherent recklessness of the behavior. Unlike naive gambling, degen culture often involves sophisticated participants who understand the risks and choose to take them anyway for the thrill, the community, or the asymmetric potential.
Origins: DeFi Summer 2020
The term “degen” entered mainstream crypto culture during DeFi Summer (June–September 2020):
- Compound launched liquidity mining → “yield farming” became a thing
- YAM Finance launched with a bug, lost $750K in 35 minutes, and attracted $600M in deposits first — the archetypal degen moment
- Hotdog, PASTA, KIMCHI, and dozens of food-themed DeFi forks launched and died within days
- Participants who chased these projects — knowing the risks, sometimes losing everything, sometimes 10x-ing — called themselves “degens”
The term transformed from a pejorative into a badge of honor: being a degen meant being early to what mattered, even if the individual bets were terrible.

Degen Chain (Base L2 Culture)
“Degen” became so embedded as a crypto identity that a dedicated L3 blockchain was named Degen Chain — launched in 2024 on top of Base as an Arbitrum Orbit chain for the Degen token community, which originated in Farcaster’s /degen channel. The DEGEN token itself was airdropped to Farcaster users and became one of the successful community tokens of 2024.
The Degen Spectrum
Not all degens are equal:
- Reckless degens — lose money consistently, don’t learn
- Calculated degens — accept specific risks methodically, diversify bets across many opportunities
- Professional degens — research everything deeply, move fast anyway, use position sizing to manage portfolio risk
Many successful crypto traders self-identify as degens while maintaining sophisticated risk management practices. The label encompasses both genuine irresponsibility and performative recklessness from sophisticated actors.
