Pirate Nation

Definition:

Pirate Nation is a fully on-chain pirate-themed adventure game developed by Proof of Play, built on Arbitrum Nova, where all game state and mechanics — character actions, crafting, battles, and economic systems — are processed and recorded by smart contracts rather than centralized servers. As a “fully on-chain” game (as opposed to games that merely use NFTs for items), Pirate Nation treats the blockchain as the game engine rather than just a ledger. This design philosophy, aligned with the “Autonomous Worlds” movement, means the game cannot be shut down by its developers and all game mechanics are verifiably fair and transparent.

Proof of Play

Proof of Play is the studio behind Pirate Nation, founded by former executives from major gaming companies (notably including leadership from Zynga). The studio’s thesis is that the next major game innovation is fully on-chain mechanics — not NFT skins on traditional games, but games whose core logic exists entirely in smart contracts.

On-Chain Game Design

What “fully on-chain” means:

  • Every player action (send ship on voyage, battle enemy, craft item) is an on-chain transaction
  • Game state is stored in contract storage, not a company database
  • No centralized game server — the blockchain is the game server
  • Game outcomes are determined by verifiable smart contract logic (plus VRF for randomness), not hidden server-side RNG

Tradeoffs:

  • Gas costs for every action (mitigated by Arbitrum Nova’s near-zero fees)
  • Slower pace than traditional games (transaction confirmation adds latency)
  • Fully transparent — no hidden game mechanics or proprietary server logic

Game Mechanics

Pirates (character NFTs)

Each player owns Pirate NFTs representing their crew. Pirates have different stats affecting voyage success, battle outcomes, and crafting efficiency.

Voyages

Send pirates on expeditions to gather resources. Voyage outcomes (resources found, events encountered) are determined on-chain using randomness. Time-locked: voyages take real time to complete.

Crafting

Resources gathered on voyages are combined on-chain to craft items, equipment, and upgrades. Recipes and outcomes are defined in smart contracts.

PvP Battles

Player-vs-player combat resolved on-chain. Outcomes determined by pirate stats + randomness.

Islands and territory

Players can capture and hold on-chain territory, generating passive resource income.

PIRATE Token

Proof of Play launched the PIRATE token as the in-game currency and rewards mechanism for Pirate Nation. Players earn PIRATE by participating in game activities; it can be spent on premium game actions and is tradeable.

The Autonomous Worlds Connection

Pirate Nation is part of a broader movement (“Autonomous Worlds”) inspired by work from MUD (lattice.xyz) and Dark Forest (fully on-chain ZK game). The philosophy:

  • Games as persistent, unkillable world-states
  • Developer is just the first contributor; permissionless extensions possible
  • Composability: other developers can build on top of the game’s on-chain state

Reception

Pirate Nation attracted significant attention in web3 gaming communities as a genuine attempt at the “on-chain game” vision. It demonstrated that fully on-chain game mechanics are technically viable and economically feasible on L2s. Daily active user numbers remained in the thousands — high for on-chain gaming, modest by traditional game standards.
