ERC-6551: Token Bound Accounts

Definition: ERC-6551, also called Token Bound Accounts (TBAs), is an Ethereum proposal for assigning a smart-contract account to an NFT. The account can hold assets and interact with applications; control is linked to the current owner of the NFT. ERC-6551 describes an account pattern and registry, not a feature automatically present in every NFT.

How Token Bound Accounts work

The proposal defines a registry that can create a deterministic account address for an NFT and a common interface for account implementations. An account identifies the NFT that controls it and can execute supported operations when authorized by that NFT’s current owner. An owner can therefore use compatible tooling to let an NFT account hold tokens or other NFTs, or interact with contracts. The NFT itself remains the transferable key to control the account.

This is different from putting an NFT inside another NFT’s metadata. A TBA is a smart contract account with an address and on-chain behavior. Creating an account and using it still requires the relevant registry, account implementation, wallet or application to support the pattern. ERC-6551 does not make every old NFT’s assets appear in a new account by itself.

Potential uses and limits

A game character NFT could hold equipment; a membership NFT could collect credentials or rewards; or a portfolio NFT could group other on-chain assets. These are design possibilities. The ERC-6551 proposal does not guarantee that a game, marketplace, or other application will recognize those assets or that they represent legal ownership of anything off-chain.

Security depends on the account implementation and the tools used to operate it. Check which contract controls execution, which networks and assets it supports, and whether its code has been reviewed. The proposal also discusses ownership cycles, such as an NFT’s account holding the NFT that controls the account; implementations and applications need safeguards for such cases. Transferring the controlling NFT can transfer practical control of assets held by its account, so inspect the account contents before selling or sending that NFT.

Proposal status

The Ethereum Improvement Proposal page describes ERC-6551 as being in peer review. It is useful to distinguish the published proposal and implementations from universal wallet or marketplace support. A project using “token-bound account” language may implement only part of the pattern or use its own account contracts.

Social Media Sentiment

In the ERC-6551 discussion on Ethereum Magicians, participants examine implementation details such as how an account should expose its owner and how proxy accounts can be verified. This is developer feedback on the proposal, not a measure of general NFT-user sentiment or adoption. Read the ERC-6551 proposal discussion on Ethereum Magicians.
