Greenidge Generation

Greenidge Generation Holdings (NASDAQ: GREE) is a Bitcoin mining company that operates a natural gas power plant in Dresden, New York, using the plant’s electricity output to power on-site Bitcoin mining. Founded in its current form in 2020, Greenidge represents one of the most high-profile intersections between Bitcoin mining and environmental controversy — New York state regulators spent years attempting to deny the renewal of Greenidge’s water discharge and air permits as part of New York’s climate law enforcement.

Background

The Dresden, New York facility has a long history as a power generation site, dating to the 1930s as a coal-fired plant on Seneca Lake. It was converted to natural gas and sat largely idle until Greenidge acquired it and initiated a “behind-the-meter” Bitcoin mining strategy: generating electricity at the plant and consuming it on-site for mining, bypassing the grid entirely.

Greenidge went public via SPAC merger in 2021 and was co-developed with Atlas Holdings, an industrial private equity firm.

Environmental Controversy

New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) established aggressive emission reduction targets, and Greenidge’s natural gas plant became a target for environmental groups including the Seneca Lake Guardian and Sierra Club:

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) initially denied Greenidge’s air permit renewal in 2022 on climate grounds
  • Greenidge appealed and the legal battle continued through 2023–2024
  • The case became a national reference point for debates about Bitcoin mining’s compatibility with state-level climate legislation
  • Ultimately Greenidge reached a settlement allowing continued but restricted operations
