Placeholder VC

Placeholder VC is a crypto-native venture fund co-founded in 2017 by Joel Monegro and Chris Burniske. The firm is best known as the origin of the Fat Protocols thesis — Monegro’s 2016 essay published while at Union Square Ventures that argued blockchain protocols would capture more value than the applications built on them, inverting the economics of the traditional internet stack. Placeholder has applied this thesis to investments in crypto infrastructure, privacy chains, and decentralized storage.

Background

Both founders had prominent predecessors:

  • Joel Monegro was the crypto analyst at Union Square Ventures (USV), where he wrote the Fat Protocols piece and helped Ethereum’s early institutional recognition.
  • Chris Burniske co-authored Cryptoassets: The Innovative Investor’s Guide to Bitcoin and Beyond (2017) with Jack Tatar — one of the first frameworks for valuing crypto tokens as an asset class. He was previously the blockchain products lead at ARK Invest.

Together they launched Placeholder with a clear protocol-investment thesis: invest in open networks that accumulate value to their base layer, with a preference for credibly decentralized systems.

Despite significant debate about whether this thesis held as DeFi matured, it remains one of the most cited frameworks in crypto investment history.
