Amir Taaki

Definition: Amir Taaki is a British-Iranian software developer and political activist known in Bitcoin circles for creating Dark Wallet (2014), the first Bitcoin wallet designed for privacy and censorship resistance, and libbitcoin, an alternative C++ implementation of the Bitcoin protocol. He later left crypto to join Kurdish forces (YPG) fighting in Syria.

Key Contributions

  • Founded libbitcoin — an alternative open-source C++ implementation of the Bitcoin protocol, enabling developers to build Bitcoin applications without depending on Bitcoin Core’s codebase
  • Co-created Dark Wallet with Cody Wilson (creator of the 3D-printable gun) — the first Bitcoin wallet explicitly built for privacy, using CoinJoin mixing to obscure transaction graphs before CoinJoin was standardized
  • Was one of the first Bitcoin figures to articulate a clear political philosophy: that Bitcoin was a cypherpunk tool for undermining state control over money
  • Contributed to the development of the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) framework alongside Amir Taaki and Luke Dashjr
  • After returning from Syria (2015–2016), renewed focus on autonomous systems, crypto privacy, and anti-state philosophy
  • Founded the Autonomous Polytechnics project to develop decentralized governance and education software

Timeline

  • 2010–2011 — Began contributing to Bitcoin early, one of the first Generation 1 developers.
  • 2012 — Founded libbitcoin, providing an alternative Bitcoin implementation in C++.
  • 2013 — Co-developed BIP numbering with Luke Dashjr and Gregory Maxwell.
  • 2014 — Launched Dark Wallet with Cody Wilson. Immediately drew global media attention.
  • 2014–2015 — Travelled to Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) to join the YPG/YPJ fight against ISIS.
  • 2016 — Returned from Syria. Continued work on decentralized systems.
  • 2017–2024 — Involved in Autonomous Polytechnics; occasional public appearances at conferences.

Controversies

  • Dark Wallet and money laundering — Dark Wallet was immediately targeted by the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and media reports, which claimed it was designed for money laundering. Taaki defended it as a tool for financial privacy and civil liberties.
  • Fighting in Syria — Taaki’s decision to join the YPG sparked debate about whether jihadi/war zone involvement by a tech figure was appropriate or performative.
  • Political radicalism — His explicit anarchist politics make him a controversial figure even in the already anti-establishment Bitcoin community.

Social Media Sentiment

Amir Taaki is viewed as one of Bitcoin’s most radical and intellectually coherent anarchist voices. He is admired by cypherpunks for his commitment to Bitcoin as a political tool rather than merely a financial one. More moderate crypto participants see him as a colorful historical figure. His work on libbitcoin and CoinJoin privacy concepts had lasting technical impact.
