Ergo (ERG) is the native coin of a proof-of-work Layer 1 blockchain built around an extended UTXO model and ErgoScript contracts. Its design combines programmable financial applications with a capped issuance schedule, mining rewards and storage rent.

How It Works
Ergo uses the extended UTXO model: coins are represented by boxes whose spending conditions can include ErgoScript programs. Miners secure the chain with the Autolykos proof-of-work algorithm, and blocks are produced on an approximately two-minute schedule. The model lets contracts carry explicit state and rules without making every application a traditional account-based contract.
Tokenomics
ERG has a hard supply ceiling of about 97.74 million. Ergo’s FAQ says the network launched in 2019 without an ICO or premine; the Foundation received a limited share of early block emissions for development. EIP-27 changed the original short emission schedule: the block reward reached 3 ERG in 2026 and the remission mechanism is designed to extend mining rewards to around 2045. CoinGecko listed about 83.498 million ERG circulating in the 2026-10-21 snapshot. Storage rent also returns value from long-inactive boxes under protocol rules.
Use Cases
ERG pays for transactions and supports contracts on Ergo. The extended UTXO design is used by decentralized exchanges, lending and other financial applications, while the chain’s proof-of-work and box model give developers a different design space from account-based networks. Storage rent is a network mechanism, not a yield that coin holders automatically collect.
History
Ergo launched in 2019 with a published emission schedule and no ICO or premine, according to its project documentation. The original plan would have finished emissions much sooner. EIP-27 later introduced a re-emission arrangement so a portion of scheduled rewards could continue supporting miners until roughly 2045, instead of treating the original eight-year schedule as the final timeline.
Common Misconceptions
ERG is not expected to stop being mined in 2027: that date comes from the original schedule, which EIP-27 changed. The maximum supply is not the same as the circulating supply, and storage rent is not a recurring fee paid by every wallet on a calendar schedule. Discussions about changing how rent reaches miners are community proposals and should not be presented as already adopted protocol behavior.
Social Media Sentiment
A September 2026 Ergo forum discussion about storage rent debates how miners should receive rent, whether proposed node changes solve the stated problem, and whether those changes are being rushed. The post is one detailed participant’s view in a technical discussion, not a vote or a survey of the whole Ergo community. direct discussion.
