IMX is the fungible utility token associated with Immutable’s ecosystem. Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM are separate network products: Immutable X is a specialized Ethereum NFT rollup using StarkEx, while Immutable zkEVM is a general-purpose EVM-compatible rollup. IMX is the token; it is not itself a blockchain or NFT marketplace.

How It Works
Immutable X was built for minting and trading Ethereum NFTs. It uses StarkWare’s StarkEx scaling engine and APIs, with transactions batched and settled to Ethereum. Immutable’s developer FAQ says Immutable X does not support general-purpose smart-contract computation in the way an EVM chain does.
Immutable zkEVM is a separate, general-purpose rollup designed for independently deployed smart contracts and EVM-compatible applications. The products share the Immutable ecosystem, but a feature or fee model available on one should not be assumed to apply to the other. This distinction matters when a game migrates assets or a user bridges between networks.
IMX is an ERC-20 token. The official token site says 20% of the protocol fee on each Immutable Protocol transaction must be paid in IMX; if a user does not hold IMX, the fee may be converted through open-market purchases. The same site says those fees are reserved for eligible active-participant rewards.
Tokenomics and Supply
IMX has a maximum supply of 2 billion tokens. CoinGecko reported about 904.47 million circulating at the market snapshot above. The official tokenomics summary allocates 51.72% to ecosystem development, 25% to project development, 13.86% to private sale, 4% to a foundation reserve, and 5.42% to public sale.
The official tokenomics page contains a label mismatch: its summary assigns 13.86% to private sale and 5.42% to public sale, while the lower unlock table reverses those two labels even though the listed token amounts correspond to the percentages. The proportions above follow the summary, and the discrepancy should be resolved against updated official allocation records before relying on the sale-category split.
The token site lists the final scheduled unlock dates for the ecosystem and project-development allocations as October 31, 2025, with earlier dates for the other listed categories. Those dates describe its published vesting schedule; they do not mean all allocated tokens are currently circulating or that future ecosystem rewards are impossible.
The tokenomics are designed around ecosystem growth. The official site describes staking rewards for participants who stake IMX and engage in qualifying network activity, and says governance proposals are published on Snapshot. Reward availability and amounts depend on program rules and activity; no fixed return is promised.
Uses of IMX
- Protocol fees: 20% of the protocol fee on Immutable Protocol transactions is denominated in IMX, according to the official token site.
- Participant rewards: the IMX portion of fees is reserved for eligible ecosystem participants; staking and qualifying activity may be required.
- Governance: the token site describes voting on ecosystem development proposals through Snapshot.
- Planned gas utility: the official page says IMX will be the core gas currency for Immutable zkEVM. That page uses future-tense wording, so this entry does not treat the planned role as a universal or already active fee rule.
IMX is associated with both ZK-rollup technology and NFT gaming, but those labels describe the wider scaling and application landscape, not the token itself.
History and Network Distinctions
- Immutable X: a specialized Ethereum NFT trading rollup built with StarkEx. Its original design emphasized NFT minting, transfers and trading with an API-based developer interface.
- Immutable zkEVM: a separate EVM-compatible rollup that supports independent smart-contract deployment and composability. It is not simply a renamed version of the StarkEx-based Immutable X system.
- IMX token: launched as an ERC-20 utility token for the Immutable X protocol. Its published uses have expanded across protocol fees, staking/rewards, governance and a planned gas role on zkEVM.
Common Misconceptions
- “Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM are the same chain.” They are separate products with different technical models. The developer documentation describes Immutable X as StarkEx-based and zkEVM as a general-purpose rollup.
- “Zero gas for NFT users means every Immutable action is free.” A protocol can abstract or sponsor network gas while still charging protocol, marketplace, royalty, bridge or application fees. Check the relevant product’s current fee schedule.
- “Every IMX holder receives staking rewards.” The token site ties eligibility to staking and activity under program rules. Participation does not guarantee a fixed payout.
- “IMX is already the gas token for every Immutable network.” Immutable’s token page describes IMX as the future core gas currency for zkEVM. That planned utility is separate from its current token-fee and reward rules.
- “The sale allocation percentages are perfectly clear.” The official page’s summary and unlock table reverse the private/public sale labels; treat that split as a documented source inconsistency.
Social Media Sentiment
- A June 2025 discussion in r/ImmutableX asked whether the ecosystem was still growing and whether IMX had lasting value. Replies ranged from skepticism about activity and token performance to conditional optimism tied to game launches, player growth and partnerships. Later replies in May and June 2026 continued to discuss adoption prospects and whether commenters were accumulating, but those are individual views, not evidence of broad demand.
