ApeSwap

ApeSwap is a multi-chain decentralized exchange and DeFi platform launched on BNB Chain in 2021, known for the BANANA governance token, Golden BANANA (gnana) premium staking tier, Initial Ape Offerings (IAO) launchpad, Jungle Farms for partner token incentives, and an integrated lending market (ApeSwap Lending) — positioning itself as a community-focused alternative to PancakeSwap for smaller DeFi-native projects seeking BNB Chain liquidity and launchpad access.

Overview

ApeSwap launched in March 2021 on BNB Chain as a community-driven alternative to PancakeSwap, which had already established dominance but was perceived as more institution-oriented. ApeSwap targeted smaller DeFi projects and emphasizes its partnership with non-profit and community causes (Blockchain Education Partnership, conservation initiatives).

The core product is a Uniswap V2 fork (constant-product AMM) enhanced with BANANA emissions farming, a premium staking tier (gnana), a project launchpad (IAO), and later a lending market — making ApeSwap a full-service DeFi platform rather than a pure DEX.

Token Architecture

The protocol is built around the following components.

BANANA

BANANA is the primary governance and incentive token:

  • Supply: emission-based via MasterApe (ApeSwap’s MasterChef)
  • Distribution: LP farm rewards, single-asset staking, partner pools
  • Utility: governance voting, IAO participation (iBANANA allocation), gnana conversion
  • Emission schedule: started at higher rate, multiple 50% emission halving events (“Banana Splits”) to control inflation
  • Burn mechanism: portion of IAO fees, 0.05% of all swap fees → BANANA buyback/burn

gnana (Golden Banana)

gnana is ApeSwap’s premium staking tier:

  • Acquired: pay 0.7 BANANA → receive 1 gnana (this is NOT 1:1; you pay 0.7 BANANA but get 0 BANANA for 0.3: the 0.3 is burned permanently, 0.7 used to mint gnana; burn: 28.57% of BANANA used to convert is burned; reflection: 1.43% of all gnana transactions reflected to gnana holders)
  • Redemption: burn 1 gnana → receive 0.7 BANANA (no penalty for redemption at 0.7 ratio; the 0.3 is already burned)
  • Non-transferable (in early design): gnana was originally soulbound — cannot be transferred or traded, only held by converter address
  • Uses: access to exclusive gnana farms with higher BANANA APY, priority IAO allocation, governance voting boost
  • Deflationary loop: BANANA converted to gnana → 28.57% burned → gnana circulation grows slower than BANANA spent

BANANA Tokenomics Summary

“`

Convert: 0.7 BANANA burned for gnana minting + 0.3 BANANA burned directly = 1 gnana

Redeem: 1 gnana → 0.7 BANANA returned (0.3 difference is permanent burn)

gnana fee distribution: 2% transfer tax → 1.43% to holders (reflection) + 0.57% to buy/burn BANANA

Trading Platform

The following sections cover this in detail.

AMM Core

ApeSwap uses Uniswap V2 constant-product AMM:

  • Formula: x × y = k
  • Fee: 0.2% per swap (0.15% to LPs, 0.05% to BANANA buyback/burn treasury)
  • Factory + Router: standard V2 architecture; ApeSwap-specific router with fee routing
  • Pairs: any ERC-20/BEP-20 token pair can be created via ApeSwap Factory

Multi-Chain Deployment

ApeSwap expanded beyond BNB Chain:

  • BNB Chain: original and primary deployment; highest TVL and volume
  • Polygon: ApeSwap V2 (same Uni V2 fork) deployed; competes with QuickSwap in community segment
  • Ethereum: ApeSwap deployed on mainnet for blue-chip DeFi pairs

Multi-chain: users can access BANANA farming and IAOs across chains via the same interface.

Farming System

The following sections cover this in detail.

BANANA Farms (LP Farms)

Standard MasterApe (MasterChef fork):

  • Users provide liquidity (50/50 token pair) → stake LP token in ApeSwap farm → earn BANANA
  • Allocation points: governance sets BANANA emission per pool
  • Top farms: BANANA/BNB, BANANA/BUSD, BNB/BUSD, ETH/BNB, BTCB/BNB
  • APY varies: 20-200% BANANA APY at various times depending on emission rate and BANANA price

Jungle Farms

Jungle Farms allow external protocols to incentivize liquidity on ApeSwap:

  • Setup: protocol deposits their token as reward → users who LP for the protocol’s pair in ApeSwap earn protocol token
  • Purpose differs from standard farms: no BANANA emission required; protocol pays directly
  • Example: Protocol X wants BNB/ProtocolX liquidity → deposits ProtocolX tokens → ApeSwap LPs earn ProtocolX rewards
  • Use case: new project bootstrapping initial liquidity + community exposure without launching their own DEX

gnana-Exclusive Farms

Certain high-yield farms require gnana (not BANANA LP) to participate:

  • Single-asset gnana staking → extra BANANA rewards (gnana yield farm)
  • Higher BANANA APY than standard farms: compensates for gnana burn cost
  • Access gate: projects partner with ApeSwap premium tier

IAO (Initial Ape Offering)

The IAO is ApeSwap’s token launchpad:

  • Model: overflow — all committed BANANA + GNANA converted to project tokens proportionally; excess returned
  • Subscription: users commit BANANA (and/or gnana for premium tier) in 12-24 hour window
  • Allocation: if $5M committed for $1M worth of tokens → each participant gets 20% of committed amount returned; 80% used for token purchase
  • Price: set by project
  • gnana priority: gnana holders can participate in restricted IAO pools with higher allocation caps
  • Project side: ApeSwap provides marketing, community access, and exchange listing (IAO token immediately tradable on ApeSwap)

ApeSwap Lending

ApeSwap integrated a lending market (Compound V2 fork):

  • Supported assets: BANANA, BNB, BUSD, USDC, ETH, BTC (BNB Chain versions)
  • Loop farming: borrow BANANA → stake BANANA → earn more BANANA; leveraged BANANA yield
  • Risk: BANANA collateral factor capped conservatively to prevent cascade liquidations
  • Interest rates: algorithmic (utilization-based rate curves); borrow rate rises with utilization
  • Separate from DEX: independent smart contracts; DEX liquidity ≠ lending pool liquidity

Social Media Sentiment

ApeSwap maintains a community presence typical of DeFi protocols in its niche. CT sentiment is generally sentiment-neutral, with discussion largely among existing users around protocol mechanics, yield opportunities, and security incidents. Token price action drives periodic community activity.
