Beethoven X

Beethoven X is the primary Balancer-authorized deployment on Fantom (now Sonic) and Optimism — operating as a full Balancer V2 and V3 instance (weighted pools, Boosted Pools, vault architecture) with embedded ve(3,3)-style tokenomics via the BEETS token and Fresh Beets (fBEETS) ve mechanism — functioning as both a liquidity hub and a bribe marketplace where protocols direct BEETS emissions through gauge voting.

Overview

Beethoven X launched on Fantom Opera in November 2021 as the first Balancer-authorized fork, deploying Balancer’s vault architecture and weighted pool technology on Fantom. Following Balancer’s multi-chain expansion framework, Beethoven X operates as a semi-independent protocol — using Balancer’s core smart contracts, maintaining a separate token (BEETS), and operating its own governance while benefiting from Balancer’s brand, audits, and product development.

Beethoven X expanded to Optimism in 2022 and, following Fantom’s relaunch as the Sonic network (2024), became the primary DEX on Sonic. The protocol differentiates from Balancer mainnet by implementing local ve(3,3) tokenomics and by being more tightly focused on the Fantom/Sonic and Optimism ecosystems.

Technical Architecture

The protocol is built around the following components.

Balancer V2 Vault

Beethoven X runs on Balancer’s V2 vault architecture:

  • Single Vault contract: All pool liquidity resides in one Vault contract
  • Gas efficiency: Swaps between pools sharing the same Vault do internal accounting rather than actual token transfers (flash accounting)
  • Flash loans: Any token in the Vault can be borrowed in a single transaction at zero cost (if returned same block)

Pool Types

Weighted Pools: Beethoven X’s signature feature

  • Custom weight ratios: e.g., 60% Token A / 40% Token B (instead of forced 50/50)
  • Use case: 80/20 FTM/USDC → pool gives 80% FTM price exposure while providing liquidity
  • Self-rebalancing: pool maintains 60/40 ratio as prices move (sells FTM as price rises, buys as it falls)
  • Impermanent loss: different formula than 50/50 AMMs — weighted pools have lower IL because asymmetric weights reduce portfolio sensitivity to price moves

Boosted Pools:

  • Idle LP capital deployed to Aave/lending to earn yield
  • LP earns: trading fees + lending yield on idle capital
  • Example: bb-a-USDC pool: USDC not being actively swapped is deployed to Aave V3

StablePhantomPools:

  • Optimized for correlated stablecoin trading (Curve-equivalent on Beethoven X)
  • Amplification coefficient (A) parameter controls tightness of peg
  • Used for USDC/USDT/DAI pools

BEETS Token and fBEETS

BEETS is Beethoven X’s governance and incentive token:

fBEETS (Fresh Beets)

  • Users deposit 80/20 BEETS/FTM LP tokens to receive fBEETS (not raw BEETS)
  • fBEETS is non-transferable (like traditional veTokens)
  • Benefits: governance voting power, BEETS emissions boost on LP positions, protocol fee revenue share
  • The 80/20 LP deposit requirement creates buy-pressure on BEETS (must purchase BEETS for LP) while maintaining 80% BEETS price exposure

Gauge System

  • Each pool can receive BEETS incentives proportional to votes
  • Protocols bribe fBEETS voters to direct emissions to their pools
  • Round-based: weekly snapshots determine next week’s emission allocations

Ecosystem Role on Fantom/Sonic

Beethoven X played the role of primary DEX infrastructure on Fantom:

  • During Fantom’s DeFi boom (2021-2022): primary venue for FTM, WFTM, and ecosystem token liquidity
  • Boosted Pools with Geist Finance, Scream Finance (Fantom lending protocols) → lending yield embedded in LP
  • After Multichain bridge collapse (July 2023): Fantom ecosystem TVL dropped >90%; Beethoven X TVL declined from $300M+ to <$20M
  • Sonic relaunch (2024): Beethoven X positioned as primary DEX for Sonic ecosystem ($S token replacing $FTM)

Beethoven X on Optimism

Beethoven X Optimism deployment:

  • Live since 2022
  • Primary use: weighted pools for OP-token ecosystem projects
  • Competes with Velodrome (which dominates Optimism by TVL/volume)
  • Niche: Balancer-style weighted pools not available on Velodrome (ve(3,3) standard pools only)
  • BEETS emissions cross-chain: single BEETS token governs both Fantom and Optimism deployments via LayerZero bridged governance

Social Media Sentiment

Beethoven X maintains a community presence typical of DeFi protocols in its niche. CT sentiment is generally sentiment-neutral, with discussion largely among existing users around protocol mechanics, yield opportunities, and security incidents. Token price action drives periodic community activity.
