Coinbase Smart Wallet

Coinbase Smart Wallet is Coinbase’s passkey-capable smart contract wallet, now described in Coinbase Help as a “Base account.” It was designed to let users create and use an onchain wallet through supported apps without first managing a traditional browser extension. The current sign-in options include email passcodes, passkeys, or a recovery phrase. That means the wallet can reduce some setup friction, but it should not be described as eliminating recovery credentials or all security risks.

Key Facts

  • Current name in Coinbase Help: Base account (formerly called Smart Wallet).
  • Wallet type: a smart contract wallet with passkey-based authentication and other documented sign-in or recovery methods.
  • Networks: Coinbase’s help materials describe this wallet type as supporting EVM-compatible networks. Bitcoin and Solana use other wallet types in Coinbase Wallet.
  • Convenience features: supported apps can sponsor network fees or batch actions, but these features depend on the app and network.
  • Recovery: users may use a passkey, an email sign-in, or a recovery phrase depending on how the account was set up. Recovery options must be configured and secured by the user.

How It Works

A conventional externally owned wallet is controlled directly by a private key. A smart contract wallet uses an onchain contract to define how wallet actions are authorized. Coinbase Smart Wallet was built to support authentication methods such as passkeys and app-friendly features such as sponsored gas or batched calls, where an app chooses to provide them.

Coinbase now uses the Base account name for the product and says users can sign in on the web or in its Base app with an email passcode, passkey, or recovery phrase. A passkey is a device or credential-provider key used to authenticate; it is not a guarantee that a person can recover an account after losing every device or provider that holds the key. Coinbase documents a recovery phrase for regaining access when other methods are unavailable.

Passkeys, Recovery, and Security

Passkeys can make signing in easier and can be synchronized by supported credential managers, but setup varies by device and provider. Coinbase warns that some passkeys are device-specific. A recovery phrase can provide another recovery route, but it is sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to restore access. Users should follow Coinbase’s current official recovery instructions, keep the phrase private, and never enter it on a third-party site or share it in a support conversation.

Smart contract design and passkey authentication change how wallet control is implemented; they do not make an account immune to phishing, compromised devices, malicious approvals, software defects, or loss of recovery access. Before signing, check the website, network, transaction details, and requested permissions. Do not assume a Base account is the same wallet as a user’s exchange account or a separate Coinbase Wallet seed-phrase wallet.

Networks and Sponsored Transactions

Coinbase Help describes the passkey-based wallet as an EVM wallet and lists different wallet types for Bitcoin and Solana. The supported networks and product interfaces can change, so users should consult current Coinbase documentation before moving assets. A supported app may sponsor transaction fees or bundle multiple actions, but sponsorship is an app-level option, not a permanent property of every wallet transaction.

Using a smart wallet also does not remove the need to understand which network holds an asset. Tokens with similar names can exist on different chains, and transfers to the wrong address or network may be difficult or impossible to reverse.

Social Media Sentiment

An August 2025 r/Coinbase thread describes one user who was confused about which passkey belonged to a Base account and how to recover it; replies include additional recovery questions and differing experiences. It is a small, individual support discussion, not evidence of a general failure rate, but it illustrates why the current recovery steps and careful credential management matter.
