CryptoPunks

CryptoPunks is a collection of 10,000 algorithmically generated 24×24-pixel portraits, created by Larva Labs and launched on Ethereum in June 2017. Its distinctive combinations of character types and accessories made it an early reference point for later NFT avatar collections. The project uses a custom smart-contract system that predates the ERC-721 standard.

How the Collection Works

Each Punk is represented by an individual token whose ownership changes are recorded through the collection’s Ethereum contracts. Larva Labs’ archive documents how the contract can return a Punk’s pixel data and attributes, making the artwork verifiable against on-chain records. The original claim process allowed people to claim a Punk by paying the Ethereum network fee; later purchases take place between collectors through marketplaces.

A token and its artwork are connected, but they are not the same thing as the collection’s brand or every possible copyright permission. An NFT records a token on a blockchain; practical display and trading still depend on interfaces, wallets, and marketplaces. Check the current license terms before using a Punk commercially.

History and Intellectual Property

Larva Labs created CryptoPunks in 2017. Yuga Labs acquired the collection’s intellectual property from Larva Labs in 2022. In May 2025, the Infinite Node Foundation (NODE) acquired the full intellectual property and now presents the official collection and marketplace. These transfers concern project-level intellectual property; they do not mean that the foundation owns every individual Punk token. The current token holder and the organization stewarding the collection’s brand are separate roles.

Why CryptoPunks Are Discussed

CryptoPunks is notable for combining generated pixel art with on-chain token ownership before NFT standards and marketplaces became widely established. Its history helps explain the development of profile-picture collections and blockchain-based art. Historical influence does not guarantee a particular resale price, demand, or investment outcome: rarity, provenance, market conditions, and the rights attached to an artwork are separate considerations.

Social Media Sentiment

A December 2025 r/CryptoCurrency discussion about MoMA adding eight CryptoPunks to its collection showed mixed reactions. Some commenters treated the acquisition as recognition of NFTs as cultural artifacts; others criticized the speculative NFT era or questioned the collection’s market value. This is a dated discussion about a museum acquisition, not a survey of current CryptoPunks holders or a measure of present market sentiment.
