ApeCoin

ApeCoin (APE) launched in March 2022 as the governance token for the broader Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) universe — at the time, the most valuable NFT collection in existence. Issued by the newly formed ApeCoin DAO, APE was airdropped to BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFT holders. The launch was one of the most anticipated in NFT history, with the airdrop generating over $600M in claimed value at peak prices. APE’s scope has since expanded: ApeCoin DAO governs the token’s usage, a new Layer 3 blockchain called ApeChain launched in 2024, and Yuga Labs’ Otherside metaverse uses APE as its primary currency. Whether APE becomes foundational Web3 infrastructure or remains a speculative NFT derivative defines its long-term trajectory.

Background: The Yuga Labs Empire

Understanding APE requires understanding Yuga Labs:

Major Yuga IP:

  • Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC): 10,000 PFP NFTs; peak floor ~150 ETH ($500K) in April 2022; numerous celebrity owners (Justin Bieber, Eminem, Steph Curry, Paris Hilton)
  • Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC): 20,000 mutant versions; 2× supply, ~30% BAYC floor historically
  • Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC): 10,000 dogs
  • Otherdeeds: Land NFTs for the Otherside metaverse
  • Acquired: CryptoPunks (2022), Meebits, World of Women, Cryptoadz

Yuga Labs funding:

  • $450M Series A (March 2022, led by a16z) at $4B valuation — one of the largest NFT company raises ever

APE Tokenomics

Total Supply: 1 billion APE (fixed)

Distribution:

  • 15% → BAYC/MAYC NFT holders airdrop (150M APE)
  • 47% → Ecosystem Fund (governed by ApeCoin DAO)
  • 16% → Yuga Labs
  • 14% → Launch contributors (B1 Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Animoca, etc.)
  • 8% → Yuga Labs charity (Jane Goodall Foundation, etc.)

Vesting:

  • DAO ecosystem fund: immediate DAO control
  • Yuga/team: 4-year vesting with 12-month cliff
  • NFT holder airdrop: immediate claimable, no vesting

Airdrop details:

  • BAYC holders received 10,094 APE per ape
  • MAYC holders received 2,042 APE per mutant
  • BAKC holders (with BAYC/MAYC) received bonus APE
  • At peak price (~$26 APE), one BAYC’s airdrop was worth ~$260K

ApeCoin DAO

The ApeCoin DAO is formally separate from Yuga Labs. In practice, Yuga Labs has significant influence through token allocations.

Governance mechanics:

  • 1 APE = 1 vote (simple token-weighted)
  • Proposals go through “AIPs” (ApeCoin Improvement Proposals)
  • Forum discussion → snapshot vote → implementation
  • No time-lock or multisig (unusual — lacks execution safety mechanisms)

Major DAO decisions:

  • Approved ApeChain deployment (2024)
  • Managed significant ecosystem grants
  • Voted on metaverse development priorities

Criticism:

  • DAO is dominated by large whale holders (Yuga, VCs, large BAYC holders)
  • Many decisions effectively pre-approved by aligned stakeholders
  • “Governance theater” criticism: DAO ratifies Yuga Labs decisions rather than independently directing

ApeChain

Launched in Q4 2024, ApeChain is a Layer 3 blockchain built on Arbitrum Orbit:

Technical specs:

  • Built on Arbitrum Orbit (uses Arbitrum’s Nitro technology)
  • Native gas token: APE (pay transaction fees in APE, not ETH)
  • Data availability: AnyTrust via Arbitrum Nova committee
  • EVM-compatible

Purpose:

  • Provide a dedicated blockchain for the Yuga Labs ecosystem
  • Enable cheap, fast transactions for ApeChain games and Otherside metaverse
  • APE used as gas = sustained token demand

Launch ecosystem:

  • Multiple games deploying exclusively on ApeChain
  • NFT markets: blur.io + OpenSea support
  • Bridges from Ethereum to ApeChain via Arbitrum bridge

Otherside Metaverse

Otherside is Yuga Labs’ metaverse — an MMO game built on ApeChain:

  • Otherdeeds: 55,000 land NFTs; sale raised $561M worth of APE in May 2022 (and heavily congested Ethereum, causing $176M in failed transaction gas refunds)
  • Kodas: Rare creatures that come with ~half of Otherdeeds
  • Othertside game: Live alpha testing with “trips” (events where BAYC/Otherdeed holders enter the 3D world)
  • Development partner: Originally Improbable (UK game engine company) for multiplayer infrastructure

Status (2025): In active development but not yet a full released game. Major milestone: Voyager (second-world playtest) with thousands of simultaneous players exploring the world.

Price History

Period Event Price
March 2022 Launch / airdrop claim ~$8 → ~$26 peak
April 2022 All-time high ~$26.70
May 2022 Post-LUNA crash ~$8
June 2022 Broader crypto crash ~$3
Late 2022 Bear market ~$1-2
2023 Range ~$1-4
2024 Bull market peak ~$2-3
2025 Significantly below ATH

APE’s high-water mark was short-lived. The token has dramatically underperformed ETH and most major crypto assets from the same launch era.

Ecosystem Games

The ApeCoin ecosystem includes multiple play-to-earn and social games:

  • Benji Bananas: Animoca Brands mobile game accepting APE
  • Serum City (BAYC): Racing game concept
  • HV-MTL Forge: Yuga game for BAYC accessory holders
  • Legends of the Mara: Browser strategy game tied to Otherdeeds

Most games use APE for premium cosmetics, staking, or governance — not purely play-to-earn token emission models.

Social Media Sentiment

APE is a deeply polarizing topic even within crypto. BAYC holders are a passionate community; many have genuine cultural identity tied to their apes. The token economics are widely criticized: 1B supply with large allocation to Yuga/VCs creates continuous sell pressure from vesting unlocks; the DAO’s ability to independently direct the ecosystem is constrained by token concentration. The ApeChain launch was better-received than the Otherside land sale (which caused one of the worst Ethereum gas crises in history and exposed poor planning). The broader “NFT PFP → token → metaverse → game” pipeline is a reasonable bet for NFT ecosystem building, but execution has been slower than promised. APE’s long-term performance will depend almost entirely on whether Otherside/ApeChain becomes a genuinely used platform rather than a speculative NFT adjacent.
