Aptos is a high-performance blockchain created by Aptos Labs, founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, both alumni of Meta’s Diem (formerly Libra) blockchain project. Like Sui, Aptos uses the Move programming language, but takes a different approach to state organization (account-based like Ethereum, not object-centric like Sui) and parallel execution (Block-STM, a software transactional memory approach). Aptos launched mainnet in October 2022, shortly before Sui, and both are often compared as “Move chain” competitors.

Technology
Move Programming Language
Both Aptos and Sui use Move, but with different virtual machine implementations (MoveVM vs. Sui Move). Key difference: Aptos uses a global account-based state model (similar to Ethereum’s), while Sui uses a localized object model. This means Aptos’s Move is closer to the original Diem design.
Block-STM (Parallel Execution)
Aptos’s key performance innovation is Block-STM — Software Transactional Memory applied to blockchain transaction processing. How it works:
- All transactions in a block are optimistically executed in parallel
- If conflicts are detected (two txns touching same state), the later one re-executes serially
- Most user transactions don’t conflict, so achieved throughput approaches theoretical parallel maximum
- Reported: 160,000+ TPS under test conditions; practical mainnet throughput considerably lower
This is different from Sui’s object model: Sui prevents conflicts structurally at the data model level; Aptos detects and resolves them at execution time.
AptosBFT Consensus
- HotStuff-based BFT consensus with pipelining modifications
- Sub-second finality under normal conditions
- Rotating leader selection for liveness

APT Token Controversy
Aptos’s token launch was widely criticized:
- Low circulating supply at launch (~7% of total supply)
- Large allocations to Aptos Foundation, core contributors, and investors with unlocks over years
- Community received tokens via airdrop, but allocation was small relative to insiders
- Twitter (X) sentiment at launch was largely negative, calling it a “VC dump” setup
This pattern is typical of well-funded VC-backed L1 launches and recurred similarly with Sui.
APT Tokenomics
- Total Supply: 1 billion APT
- Circulating (launch): ~130M APT (13%)
- Allocation: 51.02% community/ecosystem; 19.01% core contributors; 16.5% Foundation; 13.48% investors
- Utility: Gas fees, staking delegation, governance
- Inflation: Initial 7% APY staking rewards; declining over time
Ecosystem
| Protocol | Category |
|---|---|
| PancakeSwap | AMM DEX (major EVM DEX expanded to Aptos) |
| Liquidswap (Pontem) | Native AMM DEX |
| Thala Finance | Stablecoin + DEX |
| Aries Markets | Lending protocol |
| Merkle Trade | Perpetuals DEX |
| Tortuga Finance | Liquid staking |
Aptos vs. Sui Comparison
| Feature | Aptos | Sui |
|---|---|---|
| State model | Account-based (Ethereum-like) | Object-centric |
| Parallel execution | Block-STM (optimistic concurrency) | Object ownership (structural prevention) |
| Language | Move (MoveVM) | Move (Sui VM — modified) |
| Consensus | AptosBFT (HotStuff-based) | Narwhal-Bullshark (DAG) |
| Launch | Oct 2022 | May 2023 |
| Total raise | $400M+ | $336M |
Social Media Sentiment
Aptos is the subject of ongoing CT debate about whether it can carve out a niche against Solana. The Move language ecosystem (Aptos + Sui) is recognized as technically strong, but CT consensus is that Aptos has struggled with ecosystem momentum compared to Solana’s DeFi density. APT tokenomics (large initial unlock) hurt early price action and remained a CT talking point through 2025.
